Arriving home after the Regency meeting, the Baron spoke to his wife about the flier he had seen in Papua---one declaring the dissolution of the Regency. She confirmed that it was the one she referenced at the meeting and that Sid was indeed its author. "I cannot believe it," he stated, still surprised by the revelation. "That it is a vendetta is obvious, unless he is just a puppet put up to it by another govenment. Perhaps it is both."
"What do you intend to do about it?" she asked him. "You mentioned renouncing fealty to him. Is that what you intend?"
"You do know what his actions constitute, don't you? What he is doing is nothing short of treason."
"He is no longer affiliated with the Regency. At worst he is a demagogue, though perhaps a royal one."
"He is more than a rabble-rouser. I see any move made against the Regency, the one, true, legitimate government of Britannia, as treason. The Regent is the rightful heir to the throne of the departed King. To suggest he be overthrown by insisting it is the "wish of the people" is sheer madness. And I will not serve a madman."
"You are wasting your time my love. Remember the last correspondence you had with him?"
"Aye, but I must try," he replied. Thrax retired to his office to pen a letter to King Sid.
"My Lord the King,
I pray you do well. It was good to see you at the celebration in Umbra and talk to you once more. I was a bit taken aback by the unusual nature of your choice of attire, but perhaps the darkness of colour was intended to match the festivities of the place. I wonder if it did not, however, reflect your current mood?
I shall get to the point. I have been informed that you have made a declaration that the Regency be abolished and replaced by a new one, irrespective, or perhaps disrespective, of the accepted constitutional means. I would like to assume the report is false, but if it is not, then I must tell you that if you persist in this I will have no recourse except to renounce my fealty to your kingship over me and my lands. It is one thing to remove oneself from Regency activities; it is quite another to attempt to dissolve the Council by fiat. I can take no part in that and if I must choose sides, me and mine shall be forced to declare our support for and alliance with the Regency.
Do not take this as a threat. At present I will gladly assume you were making a joke or suffered a momentary fit of pique against the Regent. I am sure if either are the case, you will make it known to me. If it is not, I humbly request you state your intentions and provide justification for it.
Your Servant,
Thraxanduril
Baron of Thraxstadt
Chamberlain to the Regent"
He sealed the letter and sent it on to the King by special courier. |

*a messenger arrives*
after a short time of reading and with a grimaced look on his face,Sid begins to pen a response
Baron Thrax
alas you find me at a loss for words, but I shall try find some words to describe the situation I find myself involved in. Yes in fact I have comitted myself to a revolution of sorts and through some bizarre chance I found myself hosting a public meeting in which the public was intertained with a new idea and new hope. The proposal seems sound enough and many people know I don't act rashly. The current Regency does not satisfy the people in its actions and I somehow doubt electing a new Regent from the current Loyalist's would resolve any particular issuse and with the removal of that redundant government the people can begin to breath freely.
Baron Thrax as a Baron of Yew you will always have a place to hang your hat and if my political affilations cause you personal greif, then by all means you must do what you do, but remember while you remained as a loyalist I did not treat you with any less honor after I choose to be released as a loyalist, but I can understand as this political move may actually offend your dignity to be involved in Yew.

The Baron broke the official seal on the letter from King Sid and read it not once, but twice. He raised his eyebrows, being more than a little surprised at the tenor of the reply. "Didn't expect this," he said to himself. "A most reasonable and dignified response---clearly not penned by a madman."
He took the letter and showed it to his wife, allowing her to read it. He then asked her opinion of it.
Then he returned to his office to write another letter.
"Your Majesty,
I received your letter and found it to be a very courteous and seemly reply to my inquiries. For that you have my utmost gratitude.
I am compelled, however, to advise you, if you will allow it, as to a potentially grave and serious hazard inherent in your plan that you may not have foreseen. As you must know, no government or state can long endure that does not abide by constitutional law. When rejecting the laws that have long been established, laws that were enacted and confirmed by the rightful heirs of Lord British, laws that govern the Regency and have ever since it was created, then you have given license to anarchy. You will be brought into league and company, like it or not, with such infamous outlaws as Minax, Exodus, and other minor ones, including myself in my younger days, who have made careers out of rebellion and who follow the despicable rule of "might makes right." You may dispute such a notion, but the same value you place on your reasoning they doubtless placed upon theirs. Indeed, if opinion holds sway, and might is the rule of the day, then no other law nor any government or land is safe from rebellion and civil war.
Has it not occurred to you that even should you establish another Regent and Regency, or call it by some other name if you wish, that those who disapprove of it, and they will appear, that the very criteria you used to justify your rebellion will be used by them against it? Once constitutional law and legal decorum is cast aside, the floodgates of anarchy shall be opened and there will be no end to it. If the disintegration of a centralized government in Britannia is your aim (and I pray it is not) then you most certainly will have accomplished it.
I, therefore, can not be party to nor associated with this scheme. Furthermore, in declaring that no Loyalist is fit to govern Britannia, you have, intentionally or not, included me and others whose capabilities to govern well are an established fact of history. The assertion is not only false, it is denigration of our character. You may not personally like nor approve of the current Regent nor others of the Council, and that is your right, but that does not make any of us unfit for office.
I hope this letter will make a favorable impression upon you to the extent that you will reconsider and reject this ill-conceived design. Please give thought to your motives as well. I am certain if you search your heart you will admit that this entire affair is based upon vendetta and is not the true situation as you have described it. In any event, this is my last appeal. You need not reply unless you wish, for I shall be monitoring events very closely to determine if it has mattered to you or not.
Your Servant,
Thraxanduril
Baron of Thraxstadt
Chamberlain to the Regent"
He made another copy of the letter and sent the original by special courier to King Sid. |
