Ciara looked over into the yard, watching her mother bury something. Silly mommy she thought, watching her efforts as she dug her shovel deep. Ciara glared out the window, trying to see what was being buried. After a few minutes, she sighed, giving up. She dug beneath her pillow and withdrew a small green book with a skull on the front. She opened up the pages, and tried to pronounce the words again. Her favorite was the one with the big blue beast, though that one was very hard to do. It reminded her of the matriarch, all blue and big.
She finished practicing her pronunciations when she heard a voice whisper to her. "Ciara", she heard, whispered amongst the trees.
"What?" she answered out loud. There was a loud snuffle in response. She looked over as her brother lay sleeping, his snores muffled in the pillow. She heard the whisper again, and looked outside. It was coming from where the big hole had been. She gave the spot a dirty look, then grabbed her kitten, and climbed out of bed. She crept down the stairs, and past the teleporters. The voice kept getting louder as it called for her. "Ciara, colleen," it beckoned to her. She quietly opened the door. She paused a bit, leaving the door open, knowing the shutting would wake her father.
On tip toes, she snuck to the hole. The whisper was growing stronger, speaking a language she knew, but had never heard spoken so quickly and fluently. She babbled back, trying to speak the language, but she knew her words weren't coming out correctly. She got on her hands and knees and began digging. She could hear words she recognized, but more, instinctively knew. Her little hands easily worked into the freshly turned soil, her nails becoming full as her anxiety deepened. She dug frantically, the smells of soil furthering her need to know what was down there.
Suddenly, she felt it, a strange feeling most unnatural for within the soil. Putting her hands in the dirt, she pulled out an odd book. The whispers stopped suddenly, and Ciara stared pensively at the book. With a quick nod, she ran back into the house, careful to close the door quietly as she snuck back upstairs to hide her new treasure under the bed. |
