Maelwyn lifted her head, weakly. She didn't understand how her mother could do this to her. Glancing across her bosom, she could see the enormous swell of her abdomen. She groaned in pain as yet another thud from the inside resounded against her belly, the unseen elbow or foot bulging to make itself known. Instinctively, she tried to place her hand to her belly, to hold herself against the pain. But reality made itself known, once more, as her hand was abruptly brought to a stop by the end of the chain.
