|
Roger de Clare met an enchanting, sweet lady named Sy-wen just outside the Painted Caves. She flattered him and, being a man, he ate it up.
Somehow the topic turned to fighting monsters. She complimented him on his courage when he said he thought fighting dragons more interesting than fighting trogs. He deprecated himself saying if he didn't think he could kill dragons then he would not dare try.
She then asked him to get her the scales from an ancient wyrm. He scoffed and said he'd fought those with a large company of men to help him and many of them died in the effort
She smiled sweetly and gently stroked his charger's neck. "But you're so strong and brave! I know you can do it!"
She looked up at him with that smile, "For me?"
And Roger said, "I can't believe I'm actually thinking about it." And he bade her adieu and left. Smart guy, eh?
Except he went to Destard.
He rode quickly past all the drakes, giant serpents, and wyverns until he reached the tunnel to the second level. He rode into the tunnel and killed several drakes and wyverns in the cavern below until no more remained.
Then he checked his gear, readied his dragon slayer double bladed staff, and rode into the next tunnel to the next level down. Killed several wyverns and lured the ancient wyrm living there to the tunnel entrance.
As he later told Sy-wen, "Every time that ancient wyrm stuck his nose into the tunnel to come after me, I'd whack it."
The creature's poisonous breath and fire breathing overcame Roger three times, but each time he'd crawl away up the tunnel before collapsing. He quickly revived in the fresh (er) air and returned to battle. "I finally whacked his nose so often it killed him" he said.
But, Lo! Right behind him lunged another ancient wyrm. He admitted that made getting the scales more difficult.
"I had to skin the first one with one hand whilst fending off the second with my other hand!" he related. "I nearly lost a finger and it'll be a month before my beard grows back."
Triumpant at last, he returned to the Painted Caves. Made contact with Sy-wen and gave her the scales as she had asked. She thanked him for the prize and even said he looked better with a trimmed beard. |
