|
They had gathered along the road at the foot of the bridge. The M'Reals had set up some of the fortress already when they arrived. Pack animals were being unloaded and positions were being discussed.
There were murrmors from the gathering croud who came to watch the set up of the fort. She thought to herself, what an appropriate name. One of her greatest benefactors, friend, ally and comrad. He had nurtured her and so many others. He was her introduction to the ways of the Virtues and to many in the realm, Aleph Aeirs she said smiling softly and looking around, and she would be manning the fort with her alliance. It warmed her heart and mind with memories of bygone days.

She sat at her desk going over the plans for the fort. She thought it was her eyes but as she looked up, the shadows of mid-afternoon were growing dim and a darkness was filling the room. Looking out the window, she noticed the sun was not as bright as it should be, almost overcast, unusual for Malas. She walked to the window and leaned out to look up when her eyes started stinging and she began to sneeze. She saw through watery eyes that there was a fine dust in the air...not dust but ash. Ash? she whispered aloud. Something has happened she thought. ...and I'd wager it's not of the virtues... she again said out loud.
She returned to her desk, lighting a candle in the dimming light, and continued to review the sketches of the fort.
