What had started out as a debate had, over the course of an hour, degenerated into an argument. They stood, heatedly discussing the recent turn of events, in which the recent agreement with Darrien Church figured largely.
"You told Church too much. You should have remained silent, let him do all the talking."
"Perhaps, he is right. Maybe I was mistaken about the lich form. Perhaps it really IS the form most capable of wielding strong power. This form, this, parasitic self, is strong, but not strong enough..."
"I told Church enough, no more, no less. He claims to have made Norture and Isil, and even, yes, even Bailos! THAT is power! To have him at our side, would be of great benefit. It serves many purposes, think of it! His presence alone in the lands is felt by the dark-fearing lightbringers... Molly, and even Talon. The King has even admitted to being weakened because of it. Nay, I did not tell too much, I told just the right amount."
"So deceive him! He will not care, he will respect you more for it. Was he not famous for his own grand scheming? You are pathetic and soft, just as Dyn said."
"Ahh.. Dyn.. He wanted power.. yes.."
They continued to pace about the room. A sword gripped in a hand, a spellbook clutched in another hand, circling as they argued and contemplated.
"You don't need Church. You have the Triad. You have the Horde. Church will undermine you and betray you, just as he tried to do so many times before. You may think it simply rumor and hearsay, but know, there is always just enough truth in a rumor to give it the guise of credibility. Do you really wish to take the chance and find out what part of the rumor is truth?"
"No, there is mutual benefit between us. We have the same goals, ultimately. It makes no sense not to agree to his offer. Now, YOU listen, there is much to be learned from Church, and we do so enjoy learning, don't we? Think what it would be to shed this form, for one that need not be maintained! To never have to feed from the weak cattle that creep across this land, to never have to take the blood of the pathetic as sustenance. This form is so limited... Think of Lathiari, think of Kyrnia... so many powerful beings... All of them liches, you must admit, it is enticing..."
Ceinwyn ab'Arawn growled, the other two were going in circles, arguing pros and cons, and it was driving her mad. So much talk, and not enough action. So much biding time, and for what? Where was the bloodshed the other had promised? Where was the revenge? She finally could take it no more.
"Enough! Enough already! Darrien is a fine specimen. Did you see how he handled his mewling follower? Now THAT was true power! The waves of energy that cling to him... No crawling pathetic Norture he, nay. He is what he claims to be, a True Lich Lord. He is the rightful heir to Oblivion! He can show us the way. Where Norture failed, Church will succeed. But, to do such, he cannot do it wholly alone. He needs our forces, he needs OUR power, as well. Bailos took Sanctus, a true enemy of the Order, without help from the Order at all, but it was not enough. Nay, we must combine our power to bring about the desired end."
"Make him serve you... "
A laugh echoed across the room.
"Darrien Church? Serve somebody?"
Another barking laugh.
"His pride is like our own, he will not do that without good reason. And what more, does it not help sew the seeds of trust to place such obvious faith and trust in him? There are many forms of control in these realms. Love, trust, faith, hope, even hate, revenge, and anger. Besides, his offer is not unappealing to us, is it? Revenge will be had. You know our conditions..."
Ceinwyn watched the two, it seemed they had finally come to an agreement. One that even she could agree with. They would work with Church, they would make plans, and then.. then all of Sosaria would meet it's fate.
There was a knock at the door. They turned to face it, as it opened on them.
"Mother?" Maelwyn looked around the empty room, as if she was seeking something.
"What is it, girl?" Ceinwyn snipped.
"I thought I heard you arguing with people, I heard voices and I was.. worried.." Maelwyn frowned.
"You thought wrong! Do not disturb me, get out!"
"Yes, mother," Maelwyn backed out, hastily, closing the door.
Ceinwyn turned to face the empty room. There was agreement, and thus there was silence. They were gone.
Perhaps a new form will lift this curse... there is but one way to find out
She looked forward to her next visit with Church. She had so many questions, so many plans to make. She knew he would answer her questions, as such would create a more functional cooperation. Plus, he seemed in favor of her becoming a lich. Such was possible. Norture had been a vampire once, as well, after all... |
