LaBelle stood on the shores of Occlo admiring the coastline, both north and southward. No words had come by messenger from her Lord Majere since his departure for the lands of laws and light. She did not despair however, for she knew that her Lord resided amongst a group of nobles he had long associated with. Preferring to occupy herself with the gardens and crops; she steadfastly tended them as if he had not left. Weeks had turned to months and her notice of his absence had not prevailed.
Listening to the rise and fall of the surf, she closed her eyes and let the breeze blow over her. The distinct sound of an approachers gait steadily took precedence over the sounds of the sea. Each shell crushing another beneath the leather shoes of the forth comer. "Milady, a message comes." Said the stripling. LaBelle turned, her hand outstretched to receive the parchment. "No, Milady, there is no parchment, I bring the tiding of news..." he continued, "It has been learned that a new Regent is in place. And with Milady's previous relations and well known deference for the Government Britannia, I thought you would desire such news." She heard the subtle tone of ardency to please, and urged him on with a nod of her head. "The new Regent is the Lord Porthos. My lady may also be inclined to know that the people heard of no public election process, that his Lord may have been appointed by the Loyalists." Looking upon his bowed head, she replied, "Indeed this lady is appreciative of such news. I am grateful of your thought to my regard of Regency affairs." The stripling lifted his head with a smile, which she returned. "If you please, notify the messenger that I will have a letter ready within the hour for deliverance unto the new Lord Regent."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Milord and Regent Porthos,
I trust this letter to find you in good health and of
pleasant spirit.
News has traveled to this lady of your ascension to
Regent. With such news surely, Milord expects many
expressions of praise. I trust mine will not be lost
amongst them.
This lady indeed acknowledges your achievement
as Lord and Regent of the Government Britannia. May the
people of Britannia influence you while trusting in your
decisions and judgments. Let not the bold take
precedence over the meek Milord, for they
are equal in relevance. Might you
excercise tolerence and excert
patience, Always.
In peace and health,
~Lady LaBelle Decantor~
Moments after she penned the letter, the messenger knocked softly to her door. “Please enter.” She offered him the furled parchment and directed him to deliver it to the new Lord Regent of the Government Britannia. His eyes widened briefly, and then he bowed his head, “As Milady wishes.” She placed a small gold satchel to his hand and bid him farewell.
LaBelle returned to her writing table. She pondered the circumstance to the election of Lord Porthos. Knowing him as an honest and forthright man she concluded his designation as Regent may be the change the government so needs, or the pillar which will hold it in its stagnant position. In either case, her heart longed for the people of Britannia, their welfare, their desires and their accomplishments...Another knock upon her door...”Enter.” She replied. The girl approached smiling and lighthearted as usual, “Milady, come quickly, we are pulling forth the first of this seasons carrots! They are as long as my small brother’s arms!” LaBelle adhered her, with a smile. Wrapping her cloak about her shoulders she followed the elated girl to the western crops.
It was late afternoon when Porthos descended the stairs from his study and went into the kitchen for a snack. Mia was visiting for the day and was out walking Shasta. No doubt revisiting the two-story doghouse with that, “You need to stop spoiling the dog” look on her face. As he looked around he asked Cheryl the cook how Mia’s cooking lessons were coming along. The plump woman put one hand on her hip and with the other pointed to a pan of something black. He shuddered and did a double take as he asked, “Are those cookies?” She just nodded as Porthos took and broke one open. He smiled and said she was getting better as he pointed to the unburned center of the smoldering mass. Cheryl rolled her eyes as Ravenhurst the carpenter, who was fixing a table leg, mumbled loud enough to be heard, “Good thing she’s a looker Milord”. Porthos grinned but before he could come back with a comment there was a knock at the door. When the door was opened the young man proudly thrust forth his parchment to him. Porthos smiled, tipped him some gold and brought him to the kitchen. He told Cheryl to give him some cookies and milk before he left for his journey home. Before the two could make another joke he shouted, “Use the good cookies” from the other room.
Porthos sat down and unrolled his message looking down at the signature to see whom the sender was. His heart lifted when he saw Lady LaBelle’s name and a smile that spanned from ear to ear took him over. As he read, he was enveloped by a flood of memories of all that the lady had done to shape his path of Virtue and set his political career in motion. She had taken him under her wing and offered guidance in a time when friends were scarce and he had not forgotten. He reread the message several times and thought about how much her letter meant to him. Just then Mia came in and noticed his smile. She gave him a funny look, kissed his cheek and sat down. Before she could speak Porthos proudly showed her the missive. He knew Lady LaBelle was as a sister to her and watched her smile grow as she read. Porthos pushed a lock of wind blown hair from Mia’s face and kissed her forehead. He knew what she was thinking, “Give her my eternal thanks and let her know her advice and wisdom are always welcome”. As he started to leave, she asked where he was off to. “I am going to have Ravenhurst craft a frame”, he said with a smile, “This is one letter I wish to display”. |
