With papers under his arm and substantial satchel draped over his right shoulder, Itullus Caius paid his final tab and checked out of his inn near the heart of Luna. The evening was wearing on and the reddish glow of sunset was creeping across the horizon on an otherwise clear day.
Sufficient evidence had been gathered on the current inhabitants of Umbra, especially its Matriarch. Edgy, inquisitive and an inability to accept gifts without question were appropriate terms to describe Itullus's encounters with Lady of Umbra. No, he didn't think Umbra would be so easily bent to the will of his new Master...not this time.
On with the plan...
A horse drawn carriage waited outside the inn. After loading his meager belongings, they set off to the East for a secret rendez-vous with "potential investors" in The Divine Shadow's grand plan. Several hours later with the veil of night now cast on Malas, Itullus arrived at the cabin in the mountains East of Luna. A deal was struck. Secluded property near one of the coastal shrines to virtue would ensure that Itullus and his master could continue without interruption for as long as they deemed fit.
The deed to the property was handed over, money changed hands, a rune was traded and a Gate spell was cast...Itullus stepped through.
The old building was a fixer-upper to say the least. Mostly wood with a stone basement, a thatched roof which was less than complete and doors that didnt open quite right completed the architectural wonder. With a forced smile and a light sigh, Itullus set his satchel and papers down and pulled out the spherical prison of Bailos. Cupping it in his hands, he kneeled in front of the house and tucked the orb under one arm. With his free hand, Itullus dug a small hole in front of the bottom step, just large enough to completely bury the sphere.
Carefully setting his master down into the hole, he slowly covered it with the fresh earth, padded the dirt mount, then rose from his knees.
Holding his hands out in the direction of the house he began to channel the spell of earthquake! Minor tremors at first as Itullus was slightly rusty. Taking a deep breath, he reapplied his vigor to the spell and the trees and earth around him began to shake! First the door falls off its hinges, then the corners of the house begin to crack, boards start breaking, the roof caves in and before long, the nice coastal cabin was reduced to rubble.
Taking a self-satisfied stance with his work, Itullus kneeled down once more and placed a hand on the spot where Bailos was now buried. "Let us proceed", Itullus spoke to his Master.
Right on queue, shafts of a black shadowy energy shot up from the ground and eventually came to surround the plot of land the house used to occupy. As if by Bailos's very command, the rubble sank beneath the earth and dark stone shot up, stretching towards the heavens! A new dwelling for the Master and his Student.
When the restructuring was finished, Itullus dug up the orb and cupping it in his hands once more, strode forward into the abode, secure in their new base of operations. |
