The flash was blinding.
It all happened so fast. He had spent what seemed like an eternity hiding in the stone building, watching the world around him that he could not touch, waiting for that one moment, the fraction of a second he would be given to make his move. The realm he lay within was not friendly to him, even though it was his home. It was where he belonged, it was what he was made of... and he couldn't stand it.
He lay back and remembered what it was like on Sosaria. After the schism, the ripping of his foundations from the world when the Skull fell, he waited for his turn... and it came. He returned, but could not bring himself to stay in this new world. It disgusted him, and he fled back to his ethereal home - the Sanctuary - the memory he held of his last true home. He could not explain why he chose it, but it projected around him and brought a sense of peace, a sense of being somewhere familiar.
The Blackrock Exile.
Something inside soothed him as he looked around the place, at the broken stone. He could see the building's former glory in his mind, beyond the broken bottles on the floor, the overturned furniture, the scorched stairways, the skeleton in the corner. It was a place he could call home.
I will only get one last chance... He opened his eyes, looking around the room. The time was drawing near, he could feel it. He had to make his decision soon: return to the world for one final presence, or pass up the opportunity and stay in the Sanctuary forever. Why it was such a difficult decision was beyond him. There was nothing for him on Sosaria, and there was nothing for him in his realm.
It's time.
The metal door of the Exile flew open, and a blinding light shone through from what could only be the other world. He fought the light, burning his eyes, and set himself straight. Walking toward the door, his unearthly emotions ran amok, his soul torn in two directions: Sanctuary, or Sosaria.
He stood straight as the answer to one simple question determined his fate: Is it worth it? _________________ |
