|
The days at sea seemed to roll by as Captain Quintus Vane had been forced to keep his crew in line. This task in itself left little time for personal joys, such as counting his gold or making entries in his journal. The joy of putting ink to paper had been gone for a long time however; it had been stripped from him several years ago when his journal was lost to an attack. The Abysmal Fury had been attacked by a leviathan and though beast was slain much of the cargo being carried and many pieces of the crew’s personal effects had been lost, including the Captains journal. Quintus had never had the motivation to start a new journal, but several recent close calls with death had now given him that motivation.
As the Fury neared a small peninsula on the island of Buccaneers Den, Vane barked the orders necessary to dock the ship near the small settlement created by his crew. The ship had been successfully docked, so Quintus disembarked smiling slightly as he prepared to start a new journal, something he could pass on to his successor when the time came.
Dipping in pen in a jar of ink, he began…
Entry One – Journal of Quintus Vane, Captain of the Abysmal Fury
The crew had grown restless, with few sightings of ships or other pieces of land in several days, boredom had set in. The supply of liquor, ale, and rum was also running low which I knew would lead to even greater problems if action was not found soon. I ordered the tiller man to set sail for the Island of Moonglow as I had heard tales of conflict concerning the government of this island city, thus making it an easy target.
We arrived a day later, departing the ship Arles, Clayton, and I made way for the city. Being but a few men in a well guarded city, we quickly made way towards the docks of the city and hired a few extra hands. As the size of our party had increased we walked quickly towards the Inn as this useless little city had no tavern. Arriving at the Inn, we entered quickly, ordering the staff to gather any form of alcohol they had or they would be dead. No guards were present so the Inn Keeper quickly responded to our demands, so shortly after, with liquor in hand; we made way toward our ship. The quick raid had been a success and we once again set sail.
Entry Two – Journal of Quintus Vane, Captain of the Abysmal Fury
Several more days had passed leaving little to write about. We had set sail for the Island of Buccaneers Den to gather more supplies and unload a portion of the booze gathered from Moonglow. The trip to the Island was a short one and the crew quickly prepared the ship for another week at sea. I had been approached by Clayton with a plan to make some quick gold, but it involved something I disliked… gate travel! Clayton told me of an inland city in the nearly waterless facet of Malas. The city was named Sanctus and Clayton was sure the city would pay any amount of money for the safe return of their Queen, should she go missing.
The plan seemed to be a solid one so Arles magically created a gate to the city. It was obvious within seconds that we would be outnumbered, so we had to be quick. First we would drink and insult the occupants of the city to get them riled up and they most likely would prepare to arrest us. With this distraction in place, we grabbed the wench they called a Queen and dragged her through a gate. The gate led to the shore near our ship and we quickly set sail to Nujel’m, as it was far too obvious to hold her in the Den. We led her to a building on the Eastern portion of the island and tied her to a chair. I personally kept watch as Arles and Clayton returned to Sanctus to make our demands, which consisted of alcohol and gold. As I kept watch, a disgusting, annoying little ferret somehow jumped through the window and as soon as I saw it I chased it off. It was about this time I had gotten thirsty, so I untied the prisoner and dragged this so called “Queen” to a nearby tavern for a drink. Apparently her people do not enjoy ale however so I drank enough for the both of us.
Arles and Clayton arrived in the tavern and explained the people of Sanctus would be bringing our ransom shortly, so we made way to the ship. We approached the area where we had docked the Fury but it was not there! The worthless tiller man had not done his job and the people of Sanctus had stolen it! My anger had gotten the better of me and right as our ransom appeared, I had backhanded the Queen. This changed everything (and endangered our booty) so we grabbed the packhorses and the gold and ran. A boy named Dan was the only one with the courage to give chase and for his efforts he and his mount became food for the worms.
It had not gone as planned, but we still made way with the ransom so it had gone well. We stole another ship docked off the coast of the Island and set sail to find the Fury.
Entry Three – Journal of Quintus Vane, Captain of the Abysmal Fury
The Abysmal Fury had been run ashore on the Island of Moonglow and all supplies had been stripped from her. Arles and Clayton quickly prepared to get her back into the ocean where she belonged and I plotted my revenge. I knew we would be outnumbered but it did not matter, so long as we hurt some of them nothing mattered. We returned to Buccaneers Den with the Fury and then it was time. Clayton and Arles both knew what had to be done so the gate was opened; we were headed inland once again.
I exchanged a few words with the arrogant bastard who claimed to be King of the city of Sanctus. Having had enough conversation and seeing that we would not be compensated for our lost supplies, I decided it was time to fight. I pulled a greater explosion potion from a pouch on my belt and threw it at the cluster of Sanctus Guardsmen and their King, the explosion and flying glass did little damage as it barely penetrated their armor but it had achieved the desired result and the battle ensued.
Skyfire and several of his men fell before they were able to take us. We fell to the ground happy pirates, knowing we would need to spend several days in the Den’s Healer after such a hard fought battle.
The odds were against us and the odds were correct, but we accomplished what we wanted to accomplish, we inflicted pain upon those who had seen fit to steal our ship.
Entry Four – Journal of Quintus Vane, Captain of the Abysmal Fury
The healer did his job well (the damn bastard better have for the price he charged!) and I was feeling in high spirits. Having spent many years at sea I had learned that one of the many things that made for a poor Captain was holding a grudge, so I decided it was time to return to the city of Sanctus to make amends (and maybe steal a drink or two). As we arrived inland once again, we were quickly told we would be jailed for crimes against the city! This was horrendous! We were even! The Queen went free unharmed, the ransom was cancelled out by the stolen supplies and the battle had ended with men from both sides injured! Now this so called King wanted to take us prisoner?
Swords were drawn once again but we were VASTLY outnumbered this time… As my crew fought to allow me time to escape, I made way down the road but was quickly caught as I was on foot. Knowing fighting this time may have meant death, I surrendered. I had hoped Clayton or Arles would have escaped so that they could rescue me and I was correct. As I was taken to the prison, Skyfire ignored my many demands to be extradited to Moonglow. I was placed in a cell and in the cell next to me was Arles. Clayton was our only hope at this point as I knew I would not pay the 5000 gold coins demanded by the King for my freedom.
Apparently, and I do not have first hand knowledge of what transpired as I was in a cell, but apparently Clayton had kidnapped a citizen of Sanctus! He had also arranged for the release of me and Arles in exchange for the release of his prisoner. We were once again freed and once again told not to return to Sanctus.
I have little interest in that vile city, though they do have plenty of ale… So who knows, maybe we will return again in the future.
