Mia stood on the steps of the Paladins Hall and let out a loud long whistle, then listened for Shasta’s bark, but only heard the sounds of the forest that surrounded her home. She was growing very worried; it wasn’t like Shasta to be gone so long. Earlier in the day she had searched much of the nearby forest, but had found nothing other than the occasional paw print. “SHASTA!” she called, and again awaited an answering bark that did not come. Mia set the bowl of food down on the steps, “Where are you girl?” she whispered to herself, then turned and entered the hall, leaving the door open just a crack.

Mia got out of bed and quickly got dressed, Shasta’s absents weighing heavy on her mind. She went downstairs and straight to the door, not even stopping to add wood to the fire for the morning kettle. She threw open the door, and in her haste almost tripped over the brown furry form chewing a bone on the front steps. “Shasta!” she cried as she kneeled to hug the dogs neck, “Where have you been?” Shasta didn’t comment, just wagged her tail furiously and licked her mistress’s face. “Ugg!” Mia cried, “What have you been up too? Smells like you chased a skunk and came out worse for it.” Mia grabbed the dog’s collar and led her into the hall, shutting the door behind them. “I think a bath is in order”, Mia commented as she lead the dog towards the roof top pool, Shasta just whined softly as she was led away.
