The children ran laughing along the shore, stopping to pick up shells and coral and show each other their wonderful treasures. Rryn and Bethnarahn sat beneath a large bamboo umbrella sipping on cooled tea watching them as they played.
" To be a child again ...." sighed Bethnarahn watching them wistfully.
Rryn giggled " You are right.. but then again here we sit , relaxing and watching them."They both laughed then fell back into the comfortable silence only two close friends could have with one another.
They watched as the village children and the Otori children splashed and played. The fathers of many of these children were hard at work in town preparing so the Mother's had decided to give the children a day away from the hurried activity to keep them calm and to relieve the men of the many questions children ask.
The breezes had picked up of late and glancing about , Rryn noted the lack of cranes in the nearby marsh.
Sensing her thoughts , Bethnarahn spoke quietly
" Even the water comes further up the shore, the waves are increasing"
" Hai" Rryn replied " the monsoons will soon be upon us. It is good we can have this time for the children to enjoy."
" The house wardens have informed me the evacuation homes stand ready to receive the children and elderly from the islands." Bethnarahn stated "The shop keepers have prepared and sent the food goods needed ahead and are preparing to shutter down for the storms. All is near completion"
" This is good to know. I do not think we have much longer to prepare. " Rryn replied as another sudden gust of wind blew the silk cloth wrapper across the sand that had been covering the bento box. She watched as several of the Ladies ran chasing after napkins and coverings.
" Perhaps we should prepare to head back into town." she stated glancing far off to the horizon as the first glimpse of dark clouds began to appear. She quietly stood and nodded to the other ladies to begin cleaning up.
Bethnarahn followed her glance and quickly agreed calling the children to join them. As the children slowly made their way back towards their parents, Rryn stated quietly " It is time to begin the evacuation ..." |

The wind's had picked up since the evening before. The stout Ships Captain stood on the plank trying to be heard on the shore above the wind.
" Aye, M'Lady , we still 'ave room fer a few more. 'owever, I be needin' ta git sailing soon. This 'ere wind is nay gonna wait on me. We must be shovin' off soon."
The surrounding ships captains grunted the same as they looked at the approaching clouds.
She nodded to him from the shoreline and quickly gave orders to her assistant.
" Get these men to finish loading these supplies. Then get settled aboard yourself.. I must head to the infirmary and see that the last of the patients has been moved aboard."
Rryn headed toward the city, re-tying her kasa to her head. She had given up on the umbrella... the strong winds just whipped it inside out and flung it from her hands. This did not bode well for the islands. The storms had not even fully hit and already the winds would soon make it impossible to travel. The storms had come in a lot faster then they had expected. The prophecy that the storms would be harsh this year seemed to be true.
Arriving at the infirmary , she watched as the last of the patients there was lifted on a cloth gurney. The Chief Healer and the few that would remain behind were quickly saying their sayonara's to those that would care for the evacuee's, wishing each other safe days until they were rejoined. They stood stoic as they watched the small procession travel toward the shore. Nodding to them , Rryn headed out to allow them to finish preparing for the days to come.
Her next stop was at the dojo where they were preparing to house many of the stragglers that would wander into the city from the outlying areas seeking protection. Many wooden boxes loaded with bedrolls and other needed supplies were set in the corner. Many of the samurai would bed down here when not protecting the city. The last minute preparations were well underway here.
Many of the shops were boarded up.. their owners already traveling to safety. The last of the artifacts and treasury were buried in their vaults to protect them.
" Empress..... Empress!!" she heard the young man calling to her as he ran. " Your friends have arrived to help. They await you at the Inn"
Rryn thanked the young man and gave him a message and told him to head for the ships. She headed in the direction of the Inn as the first of the rain began to fall softly. |
