“Your father fears you . . . I am only thinking of your safety, Princess . . . He has a terrible temper . . . an evil man . . .”

Mai’s mind was swimming with all the things her uncle had just told her. She had gone to her uncle to simply open a treasure chest, but Mai received much more than she had expected. She slowly rode through the woods, wandering, preoccupied with the revelations her uncle had just shared.

“It was foretold . . . Takeda would die at the hands of his child . . . He fears you will grow strong . . .Your guard is an assassin . . .” A tear began to trickle down her cheek as thoughts of what her uncle had said overwhelmed her.

Mai shook her head furiously. “I would never hurt Father! Never!”

Although Mai had only been in these lands for a short time, she had been welcomed with open arms. She was surely a surprise to Lord Takeda, not knowing he had fathered a child over twenty years ago. She recalled her own shock when she learned that truth as well. Now they were together. He seemed pleased to have her in his home, warm and caring, embracing his daughter as if she had always been in Isamu.

As if trying to reaffirm herself, Mai uttered aloud, “Father is a good man. He is well respected, with many friends. He helps anyone in need. He does seem a bit rigid at times, but still, how could the things that Uncle Mephisto had said be true? Father wouldn’t harm me, would he?”

Again her uncle’s words seized her. “. . . Your father hides his true feelings . . . Ask Lord Tai. He knows of your father’s dark side . . .”

Mai decided to do just as Uncle had said. She would pursue the insight of Lord Tai.
