Shade held her breath, as she had once more forgotten she had no breath to hold. She could make her chest rise and fall but it was only the movement of muscles beneath her white skin no more. Her lungs held still refusing the admittance of air. Water lapped around her ankles as she sat upon the beach watching the retreating boat floating aimlessly away slowly sinking into the depths of a watery grave. She could see the blaze of fire upon it eating away at the timbers mercilessly a mass of red and gold sinking slowly from sight.

For Steels funeral she had worn crimson a color every kindred would surely appreciate. If only he could look upon them all once more. She shook her head such foolish thoughts, so silly for her to mourn his loss. Shade new little of family, and had always cared very little for the whole idea ever since she had been sixteen. Yet Steel had been the closest she had had to a brother.

Univited, thoughts of her father arose immediately in her head and she cringed, feeling once more the pain. Pain she had thought she had forgotten. Her hand rose unconsciously to her neck and she made a soft rubbing motion against it but to no avail, as her pain was no longer physical, it could not be soothed.

The water had risen higher about her legs and once more dragged at her skirt. A feeling of familiarity broke over her. Yes she had been here once before when she had felt this loss for someone else and now she sat once again staring loss in the face.

Her mind raced back to the days of her initiation into the Cabal, when she had stood headstrong and proud. She had stared out over the castle ramparts vowing to serve, looking upon these same waters. She had felt a sense of purpose and she again reaffirmed to herself to see the Cabal’s cause furthered at any expense, even her own. There was still a streak of dried red blood running down her cheek and she wore it like a warrior’s paint. Steel had been a great fighter and his legacy would carry on.

She smiled and spoke to the ocean as it gobbled down the last remaining bits of that magnificent boat. I am sorry, I can't say it you see, I promised, I promised never to say goodbye.
