Mauric Branwyr sat down heavily upon the soft bed in the chamber provided him by his captor, Otori Yotogi. Nujel'm was a magical city, and the palace the jewel in its crown---he could see that. From the windows of the room he could look out and see the colorful garden, well-tended lawn and take in the scenic vista of the sandy beaches and deep blue ocean far beyond to the south and east. None of that, however, livened his spirits. He was a prisoner, albeit a willing one, who knew for certain that his doom was sealed. He could not prove that he did not poison the Empress Rryn Anyai, nor could he provide any clues as to who had.
He had written Lord Thrax explaining his dire circumstances but had yet received no reply, nor had his favorite pigeon returned. That did not bode well. He had sent another message to his family, whom he instructed to inform the Duke and Duchess of Yew at her earliest. He felt sure they would post guards around his family to keep them safe from any possible retribution by Thrax's cronies. He decided to send a message to Lady Molly of Luna and Lord Spawn of Sanctus, both whom he knew to be very sympathetic to him in the past; people whom he could trust and who could provide competent legal counsel. Taking parchment and a pen, he wrote identical messages to them both.
"My (Lady Molly/Lord Spawn),
I find myself in a dire predicament. I have been placed under arrest for the poisoning of the Empress Rryn Anyai. I did not do this. I have been framed. Any legal aid you can offer will be welcomed. I will explain more details of my circumstances should you decide to help me. If you can not or chose not to help me, I will understand. I took a risk when I entered the employ of Lord Thrax seeking to discover the evils I know he has done to the people of Papua. It appears my plan has failed, badly. I would not blame you if you elect to ignore this plea, but I have no choice but to make it.
I pray this finds you in good health and spirits. I wish the best of all good things to you and your realms, always.
Mauric Branwyr,
Director of Trade, Papua"
Fastening the notes to two pigeons, he sent them on their way and prayed for a miracle. |

Dear Maurice,
I was suprised when I spoke to your wife and she relayed that you had taken employ with the likes of Thrax.
I will be happy to meet with you in regards to your situation as soon as I am able. Please forward a time when it is convenient for both of us to meet. I would very much like to discuss your circomstances and your accused offenses with you.
I will do what I can to help if it is in my power to do so.

After several days of anxious waiting, despite being treated kindly by those who had incarcerated him, Mauric was glad to see a pigeon bearing a note at his window. He removed the note and brought the bird inside, allowing it to roam freely about the room. He threw it a few crumbs of bread before he opened the note and read it.
"I guess she does not believe me," he muttered, noting her words about taking employ with Thrax. It *was* easily unbelievable. He owned a luxurious house in Yew, wore the finest clothing he ever had, was being paid handsomely, and was spending it like it was going out of style. Looking back now, he realized the enormous risk he had taken in his plan to expose the evils of Thrax, and, he thought ironically, there was a possibility, however remote, that Thrax was not even involved.
Taking his writing materials out, he wrote a thankful reply and sent it to Lady Molly. He was thankful that she, at least, cared about his troubles. |

To Lord Branwyr,
Word has been reached me that you have been apprehended for a crime you said to have been framed of. This is indeed unfortunate news but worry not my friend, I shall provide any assistance that may be needed but only within accordance with the law. Please let me know the appropriate time and place to meet with you. I do apologize for not responding sooner for I have been rather busy within Sanctus. Good day my friend. I look forward to hearing from you again.

Mauric was overjoyed to read the letter from Lord Spawn. It helped allay his fears of the upcoming meeting with Thrax, whom he had been told was coming to talk with him. At least now he would have reputable and competent counsel should it come to trial; two people who would stand for him that he could trust.
The more he thought about it, the more he realized the foolishness of thinking Thrax had poisoned the fruit. It placed him in almost as difficult a situation as he himself was in, and the fact that there were so many other ways for Thrax to have discredited him, or worse, lingered in his mind. Yet he could not imagine who would have done such a thing, unless he had been a pawn in someone else's game, not to discredit him, but discredit Thrax, or even kill the Empress. Whoever it was, he knew they did not care about him or his fate.
He wished he had remained a simple mage selling reagents in a small shop in Papua, not the pawn in a game of high stakes which dealt him such a foul hand. |
