Mallory woke up as the sun started to peek over the horizon. She pulled the covers up tighter and wondered what the day would have in store for her today. There had been so many things that had recently happened. Her beloved Smiticles had returned, but she had not heard from him and she worried that perhaps time had changed his heart more than he had let on. Mallory looked down to her bandaged hand and frowned slightly. She wanted nothing more than to write to him and tell him about the recent mysterious invitation, but after her recent encounter with some elementals while gathering fertile dirt she was not able to write anything. Not for a few more days. Perhaps she should ask someone for help, but it was something she was not very good at. She turned over and the note from the mysterious invitee caught her eye. There was a soft knock on the door and the young girl that was staying with Mallory, Amy, peeked in her head… “Miss Mallory… a message has arrived for you. Shall I leave it here on your stand?” Mallory smiled at the girl and beckoned for her to enter. She had not wanted to accept any help, but admitted it was nice to have another soul here on the island with her. It did not seem quite so lonely. Mallory accepted the letter and her heart leapt with joy upon seeing the writing of her beloved. She looked at Amy and smiled “Thank you for bringing this to me. I shall be down in a few moments and we will return to Sanctus for a bit of breakfast before I go to the healers. Some hotcakes and honey sound delicious to me…” Amy grinned and nodded. “I shall be ready Miss Mallory…”
Mallory unfolded the note and tears sprung to her eyes. How happy she was that Smiticles had returned. He had certainly surprised her! She had been speaking with the husband of the Lady Regent in Sanctus when she looked up and there he was. She could scarcely believe her eyes. She pinched herself to make sure it was not merely another of her dreams, and upon feeling pain she allowed herself to believe it really was him. She nearly upset the table in getting to him, and once he was within arms reach she tenderly reached out to touch him too afraid he would simply vanish. The night had been filled with tender hugs and tears as they both relayed their stories to each other. Mallory did not want to let go of his hand, as it provided the comfort she had been yearning for, but alas as the night faded and the fire in the fireplace began to expire it was time for them to say their goodbyes. Before he left, Smiticles gave her the loveliest pair of earrings; they were a soft blue and sparkled like nothing she had ever seen before. She hugged him tight and in her heart she did not want to let go, but knew that she had to. They said their goodbyes and she went back to her home on the island. She fell asleep quickly to the lull of the waves and slept soundly.
The following day she spent most of her day collecting fertile dirt for her new garden, but returned to Sanctus for a meeting with the supply officer to discuss a possible job for her. When she arrived she saw Lady Kruez and Lord Kruez at their home in a discussion, so she excused herself and left to find some food inside the hostel. Just as she was about to enter the hostel she was approached by a man in black. She turned to speak to him and as she did he attempted to grab her. She screamed and fell on the ground and as he disappeared he simply shouted “For the Brigands!!” She did not know what to make of this, and luckily Lady Ariel was nearby and came to her aid. She made her way into the hostel only to find that her precious earrings were gone. She at once went back to the scene to try and locate them in the grass. Perhaps they had merely slipped off. She searched through the grass but did not find them. She sat there and wept, having lost something so precious to her. Lord and Lady Kruez helped her back inside where she was given some warm cider to help calm her nerves. Instead it began to bring back strange memories. She finally retired to her home and upon removing her robe she found the earrings had somehow made their way into her pocket. She clung to them and did not stop to think how they had made it there. She put the earrings on and looked in the mirror, and the sparkle of the earrings almost kept her from noticing the runic scars. It still being fairly early in the day, Mallory donned her armor and returned to the dungeon of Shame to collect some more dirt for some new plants she had aquired. She had been distracted by a shimmer on the walls when an elemental took her by surprise. He knocked the sword to the ground and she managed to fight him off long enough for a nearby miner to hear her cries and aid her. She gathered her sword and was escorted to the nearby healer. The healer bandaged her up, and while he noticed the scars he said nothing. It would be a few days, but her hand would heal fine…
Mallory sat up in bed and decided she had babied herself enough. She pulled a piece of parchment from the desk and began writing carefully with her other hand…
To my sweetheart and beloved,
Several days have past since I have last seen you, but the warmth of your embrace and the comfort of your touch remain. Please forgive me in not writing to you sooner, I shall explain myself when we are once again together. Your letter has brought me much happiness and has placed a smile upon my face. Surely people must see me and think I am mad... which I am! I am madly in love with the greatest man in Sosaria.
I will be most honored to attend this event with you. I too received an invitation. I was quite perplexed, but to be honest I thought that perhaps it was from you. It is very peculiar, don’t you think? Who do you suppose would have sent this?
I am certainly looking forward as always to spending more time with you. When we are together the rest of the world and all of is problems seem to melt away. Getting to meet and know your friends and family is an added bonus to the evening.
With all of my love,
Mallory Rowdep
She signed the letter and was quite pleased with the outcome. It had taken longer than normal, but it was worth it. She sealed the note with a bit of wax and a kiss and after getting dressed she went downstairs to find Amy waiting patiently working on some sewing. She laughed softly and told Amy to go ahead on to Sanctus without her. There was something she wanted to deliver herself… |
