As an after thought, what becomes even more interesting to me is that as a half elf I have rped my original rp character, Mairsil, as getting somewhat old in his 300's,
Heh, kidna cool that I was accidentally accurate. _________________ "You see I can not be forsaken, because I'm not the only one. We walk amongst you, beating, r#ping, must we hide from everyone?" - Jon Davis |

Luckily Umbrans don't have to worry about a time standard. We create our own time...lol _________________ Darrien_Church: he asked what was the church of england based on

Race etc, can be taken into account as well. Elves age different than humans and so on. _________________ "The ability to speak does not make you intelligent."

That's all fine. But do we actually age that fast?
Say, for instance, something were to happen to our universe (and, for argument purposes, we survived). And, for some reason, the Earth spun on its axis a little faster, and was moving around the sun faster as well.
Yes, our days would go by faster. And yes, our years faster.
...But we would age the same.
I myself have aged Vaen about 12 years since I started playing him. So obviously I've gone with some time flow push. But I'm throwing the above idea in as an option if we, as a community, ever decide to agree upon a single idea. |
The problem that comes up with that is if I'm using the 12 years per IRL for aging, and you're using 3 years per IRL year, then four years later I'm going to end up with a family line while Vaen's still not thinking about kids ;(
I had no idea Vaen was so young, actually. I figured he just... transcended age or something.
If anyone cares, I could explain the time passage and how come the Dazardrez is at 4 generations, but I don't want to derail the thread.

And because I'm bored, I made a chart of Umbran character aging :P

I asked around about this before. From what I gathered, child roleplayers use the Soap Opera aging chart, I.E. age the child whenever it is no longer interesting to be at that age and more character depth is desired. This tends to go very fast, as goona's chart shows very well, most roleplayed children are 18+ in under half a year most of the time.
The next standard is usually a lack of standard; if you want to follow character aging, most people tend to forget the 5:1 ratio (not intentionally, and I admit to this as well) and just age a bit at a time. It works fairly well, using common sense, but the 5:1 ratio is the real true number if you want to follow it.
The last standard is that some people simply refuse to follow age for whatever reason. Elves and undead don't really need to be bothered with it, because 20 years is nothing to them, but there are plenty of human players that have no excuse or reason but are simply eternally ageless and never age. I find this common among players who have no sense of character development and evolution and expansion of their roleplay. No big loss there, since you tend to discover everything their character is about in the first five minuites of observing them in game.
Just my two cents, but I really did go on this warpath before, and nobody cared about it. |

I don't think that character depth and lack of character aging have any links whatsoever. Some people go by the 1:1 ratio, some people go by the 1:3 ratio, and some go by the 1:5 ratio. Whichever they choose has no reflect upon the depth of the character, or the manner in which they roleplay. It only shows how they perceive the time flow.
If we must conform to one standard, my vote is for the 1:1 / 1:5 ratio. Confused? Well, listen up.
As far as the body ages, it would be the same as real life. Meaning, that as one Earth Year passes, our character would age one Earth Year (soap opera rules for kids aside).
However, for every Earth Year, Five Sosarian Years pass. So, if my character was 20 Earth years, he'd be 100 Sosarian years.
I would prefer, however, not to bother with going to a simple standard. It is unimportant in the grand scheme of things. And in a world with magic and such, there would most definitely be anti-aging concoctions all over the place.
The more we concern ourselves with our own characters, and the less we concern ourselves with someone else's characters, the better we will become as a community. _________________

I've always generally gone by the 1 to 5 ratio, personally. Just something I couldn't get out of my head for whatever reason. Ceinwyn is half drow, half human and was about 230 years of age before she became a vampire.
In Umbra, we artificially age progress the children for war training. We do actually rp this out. |

I just make up ages. F the graphs and the calculations.
I do a rough estimate and age my chars accordingly. I obviously don't jump from 30-40 in a month. But I don't know my chars birth dates or anything |

it gets dark 7 times in 24 hours of rl. I always figured that one day was a week UO time. That was the formula I have used since I started playing. I didn't know there was one posted somewhere on Stratics. _________________ Grand Duchess Molly Kaldhel

If Arlin was 20 when I started in 2000, then he'd have to be 60 by now

I rember this thread cropping up fairly recently!
I always went by 1 RL year = roughly 5 years for my character. I started in 2000 and she was 13, so that made her about 33 when I quit. She'd be in her 50s now.
Ageless elves and undead often annoy me, because some unskilled people use them as an excuse to have an eternally youthful character. People with more skill will manage the lack of physical aging much better and still RP personal growth of the character. |
