I only got to play a little last night (lie) and still don't know how I feel about it overall. It's one of the most beautiful, lazy roleplaying games I have ever witnessed. It is reallllllllllyyyyyyy lazy. I don't want to give too much away, but I found that one of the elements that made the standard roleplaying game difficult, elemental alignment, was in large part taken out of the player's hands. A lot of this were taken out of the player's hands... However, the animation, cel design and music are stunning. The voice acting is solid. *is so confused as to what he thinks*
Whaddah 'bout yous? |

In all honesty... since I played Final Fantasy Ten, I haven't bothered going back to the series at all. The 7th game was the last one I enjoyed, the 6th being my favorite.

I'm waiting to head on out to San Diego again to play it with my boyfriend, but from what I've gathered it's incredibly linear and mediocre. It's not bad, my brother's playing it and said it's playable, just not really as interesting as a good game.
And at this point you need to ask, do you want a game? Or a movie where you sort of move through it? Because I think Square is really trying to make the latter one there. |

Kaelthir: I can see how one would come to that conclusion, and I would have to agree somewhat. While I have only played a few hours, I am very disappointed with how many cut scenes there are and feel like I am playing the first Xenosaga. However, the cut scenes are wonderfully designed and a true spectacle for the visual senses. I really want to get off the linear plot progression though! It's really lame.
D'thal: X/X2 are stupid games, in my opinion. However, the last PS2 release (not the MMORPG), FFXII, was a pretty great game. It may suffer a mild case of wtf-whereistheplotitis, but, overall, it's like playing an MMORPG without the other players. In the end, it's that what we all desire? |

Yeah. If you go into it expecting to watch a movie, it's probably more enjoyable.
And for those of you who dislike FFX, there's a good Let's Play where they just make fun of the game the whole time. I think what made it the best was deciding Tidus has severe autism, which suddenly makes his awkward character make sense. You'll also see I have fan art I drew for it, and a really awful Blitzball song :o

The videos are fun to have going in the background, I play them while I do homework. |

I don't have much to say besides that. I liked 5-10 in varying degrees (except 9, which I thought was trash, I never even finished it), X-2 and 11 didn't count, 12 felt like a single player MMO and I only played about 6 hours of it, and I don't have a console that can even play 13. It really feels like the series is dead for me.
Hope 13 is more enjoyable than 12, at least. D: |

Since you feel the same as I do, have there been any decent RPGs in the past couple of years that I've missed? I haven't seen one that I thought I could put up with. |

I enjoyed Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2.
Cal's suggestion is a good one as well. |

I don't have a 360, Wii or PS3, so I can't help you on the new consoles. If you have a PSP, Crimson Gem Saga is really amazing, Crisis Core was good for a PSP game too. For PC, Mass Effect 1 and 2 and Dragon Age are all at least worth going through once; at most, amazing.
I also echo Ken's sentiments that all of the above are not as cool on a console. ME1/ME2 are more or less FPS games as well, and FPS's are just awful on consoles. Also, Dragon Age on consoles was dumbed down like crazy and doesn't even need you to be remotely proficient with tactical pausing to assign orders to your party, which is part of the fun.
Otherwise, I'm drawing a blank. Most traditional RPGs end up on consoles, and honestly, 'the traditional RPG' is kinda dying. I don't know if I've seen any turn based RPGs in forever.
I think Alarin recommended Tales of Vesparia for Wii... Other than that, I'm out of ideas. |

First of all, DA:O is fine on console, but better on PC I'll admit.
And secondly, and most importantly, FFXIII is absolutely fantastic and easily one of my favorite Final Fantasies already. The graphics are hands-down the best graphics ever featured in a video game, both technically (nobody likes Crysis) and artistically. Yes, the game starts off very linear (as does many other FFs and games), but about halfway through it really opens up and becomes one of the most open FF's to date, with one field being the largest ever featured in a FF. And this game is not lazy at all, what are you talking about? The combat is really addictive, and yes it starts of simple (why would they make the beginning complicated with a completely new battle system?), but as you advance it becomes more difficult, making it one of the most challenging FFs. You're constantly on your toes during combat and you can't delay for a second trying to think what would be best to use, you just have to choose it and do it. Even using Auto-battle, you still need to be watching your enemies, your allies, stats, ailments, etc. You can die so quickly if you hesitate even for a few seconds. This is the funnest combat system in the series, I think.
And this game isn't a freakin' movie, it has about 9.5 hours of cutscenes yes, but that's even less than the amount FFX had and no one complained about that being a movie. If you want a movie that has a couple hours of gameplay, go play Metal Gear Solid 4. Besides, the cutscenes in this game are actually vital and interesting and very pleasing to the eyes and ears.
Just everything about this game is great. Gameplay, story, graphics, voice actors, characters, etc. etc. I could go on and on. But yeah I guess there are NO TOWNZ, while there are, but not in the traditional sense of "let's rest at the inn, now let's buy some potions, okay let's talk to some NPCs who will tell us stuff we don't care about." Was that ever really fun? No. It wouldn't make sense with the story anyway.
That being said, FFXIII is great, a thousand times better than 12 (and 9, which I think is the weakest and weirdest FF to date). Of course nothing is worse than Final Fantasy II, which is universally known. FFXIII is a great addition to this dying series and very well might have saved it.
Oh and I love FFX, such a brilliant game. My favorite, along with VII (typical, but it's just that good). A remake of FFVII for this generation would be one of the greatest RPGs of all time... if they did it right, and they probably aren't going to even do it anyway.
Once again, all my opinion here. End rant. |
