The moon shown high in the sky and its beams glistened off the cold ice surrounding the sleeping girl. Her mind wandered free and happy her spirit soaring above cold frozen wastelands and dead jumbled trees. Rotten swamps bubbled beneath her and people ran with terror and agony in their wake. She breathed in deeply the sweet smell of smoke rising from the homes below her. The panicked screams of ash-covered children reached her ears as they knelt over the dead corpses of their parents bringing a smile to her dream covered face. Her spirit soared on looking down at the death and destruction her stomach grumbling in hunger at the sight of all the fresh blood.
She hovered for a moment looking at a small boy who sobbed over the burnt corpse of his faithful friend. He stroked the dogs’ burnt fur, and kissed its’ charred head. The scene was infinitely satisfying to her the sadness, the despair, in the young child’s face. His loneliness cried out for his companion and Nightshade chuckled quietly. She floated gently down to the ground beside him and with a cold touch cupped his chin. What is your name boy? Looking up at her his eyes filled with tears and he choked up a bit unable to speak. She smiled at him gently, encouragingly. You know I can make your dog move again young master. Tell me what is your name? The boys eyes shown at her and she suppressed a laugh. Derrick is my name strange lady. How old are you young master? she asked gently. I am but ten he replied. I would be honored if you would call me Shade as my friends do young master. He looked at her quizzically then at his dog and stuttered can you really bring him back to life?
Smiling Shade rested a hand on the dogs’ charred body and whispered low a jumble of words the boy did not understand. The dog twitched as a green light swirled around it. Slowly it rose before them on four skeletal legs chunks of flesh hanging from its body an impression of the dog that once was.
The boy stared at it in horror and looked back at her. That is bad magic, you’re a bad lady. Feigning tears in her eyes she spoke sweetly to him. I saw your sadness I simply wanted to help, I wanted to take your pain away. The boy started backing away from her, what is wrong with your teeth?
Sighing softly she grabbed the little boy by his arms and dragged him to her. He struggled in her grasp but he could not match her strength, just as she lowered her head to bite into his neck she heard a familiar voice. Nightshade let him go you cant do this, he is only a boy. She stopped cold turning to face Xandria dragging the boy with her. She spoke quietly and I was just a girl… Xandria blinked in shock and said coldly you were going to turn him into a vampire weren’t you? Nightshades chin went up the boy continued to struggle and cry in her arms. She looked down at the boy and with a cruel blow rendered him unconscious. Xandria watched her intently. Let him go! Nightshades green eyes flared, I am putting him out of his filth covered misery, you have become weak Xandria!
Xandria looked at her more closely Shade your body is still in ice how can you be here roaming like this. Nightshade fidgeted with her white dress a bit. You are looking upon my spirit Xandy it sometimes lets me roam free… Scowling she dropped the boy to the ground still unconscious, You win Xandy do what you will with him I must return. With that Nightshade vanished leaving behind the unconscious boy and the atrocious remains of his skeletal dog.
Nightshades eyes flicked open within the ice and she felt the coldness surround her. She felt a strange sense of terror not sure what brought her here or why she was held trapped in this frozen chunk of ice. The cold invaded her once more and she slowly closed her eyes thinking silently What have I done now? before sleep once more claimed her.
Xandria stood staring at the boy on the ground and looked up at the sound of the dog trying to limp about. One of its legs fell off. Such a shame, an improvement though on the dog, I have to hand her that. Shrugging she stepped disdainfully over the pool of blood gathering under the fleshy corpse of the dog and walked on. _________________ Something is Wrong, I can still feel Existence... |

Looking back at the space where Nightshade had vanished, Xandria sighed. How typical, she thought. Even dead Shade is still troubles I need to fix. Looking at the decaying dog, Xandria muttered a few words, and watched as the animal fell apart. Carefully avoiding what was left of the corpse, she looked at the boy, shaking him to wake him up.
"Find your parents," she told him, watching him quake in fear at her appearance. "There are too many… unsavory people wandering about tonight."
"Yes…err… um…." Xandria could see the boy did not know what to call her. Flicking her tail in irritation, she looked over at him.
"My lady will do," she said, dismissing him.
She slowly began to walk home, anxious to see Steel again. She began to mull over the conversation she had had with Shade. Suddenly, she stopped.
Him, she thought. Suddenly, a light began to show in her eyes and she began to laugh. Looking around, she spotted a dead horse.
"You'll do," she said with savage delight. Then with a flick of her hands, the horse arose, appearing whole, but for the slash in the chest it had received as its mortal blow. Mounting the horse, Xandria rode furiously past the city, into the woods. Arriving near a dark cave, she slowed her speed and narrowed her eyes. This is it, she
thought. Closing her eyes, she probed the area with her mind, only to open them suddenly in shock.
She grinned, adn started chuckling to herself as she walked into the cave. "Such hatred," she murmered, sliding her hand down the cave walls. "Who do you hate with such passion?" She could feel the area vibrate with the tension. Glorying in the feel of such anger eminating from the caves, she walked further in, to where she could feel the heart of the emotions pulsing. Looking up, she saw Nightshade, frozen, standing next to the Shrine of Chaos.
"There you are," she muttered, then walked over to the frozen body, leaning against the shrine. Touching the shrine, she felt the hatred seep away, leaving only a need.
Standing, she looked at Nightshade, who was still frozen.
"Free her," she said aloud, looking at the shrine. "I will bring you the one you need, but free her."
Slowly, as though a sunbeam had hit it, the ice began to melt. Nodding, Xandria began to walk outside, anxious to tell Steel the the wonderful news. Chaos had approved, and they were going to get everything their hearts desired. |
