Kilena remained in Wind, her mind continually replaying the recent events. She could not keep herself from thinking of Kay. He had not been her first love, no. In fact she had not wanted to love him. She had been down this road before and it had led to where she was now… alone.
She was young, by drow standards, and naive to the world around her. Stubborn her mother said, strong willed was the term Kilena used. She had been told to not trust those on the surface, but being young Kilena chose not to listen. She was intrigued by these mortals. It began with a simple trip to a nearby town. That was when she had seen him.
Thomas was the oldest son of a nearby farmer. He watched her closely, although she did not notice. He knew what she was. She was one of the ones that the elders spoke about in hushed tones. He did not understand how something of such beauty could be considered evil, but he did not doubt. The elders spoke of the raids and Thomas knew that they had been forced into small underground cities. Seeing her only confused him further. He sought her out and thus began their friendship, little known that their innocent romance would cause the feud to only be deepened.
Many nights they kissed tenderly and Kilena would make her way back to her home and Thomas made his way to his. Fearful to be caught together, but even more terrified to be apart their time became longer and longer. One day one of her mother’s guards, who secretly wanted Kilena for his own, followed her and reported her escapades to her mother. Furious her mother forbade her to see the human ever again. Kilena’s heart broke and she promised that she would not, but requested one final time to tell him. Strangely enough her mother agreed to her request and sent the guard with Kilena that evening. Kilena walked the entire way with her head hung, dreading having to tell her beloved she was not to see him again. When she arrived at the spot she did not see the lantern that marked that Thomas was there. Instead there was a group of men there waiting for her. She turned to run but was struck with an arrow and the last memory from that night was the sight of the guard running back to the underdark city.
When Kilena came to she was on the dirt floor of a crude jail cell. Her injury ached, but was healing quickly. Her eyes adjusted and she saw a man in the corner watching her every movement. She backed herself into a corner as he made his way over to her door. He looked at her and suddenly grinned cruely. “Thought you were special did you? When will your kind learn you can’t just take whatever you want?” With that he spat in her direction and returned to his seat and was quickly snoring. Kilena put her head against her legs and cried herself to sleep, but it wasn’t long that a noise awoke her. She looked up and saw the light of a torch coming towards her door. She squinted her eyes and finally made out the image of Thomas behind the glare. Thinking he had come to her rescue she stumbled over to the bars and forced herself to stand, but he only looked at her with a blank stare and turned and walked away. Kilena crumbled to the floor and cried out in anguish, not from the pain in her shoulder, but from the pain of her heart being torn.
For days she drifted in and out of conciousness, knowing only one thing that she had been betrayed. One day she heard a commotion in the town. She opened her eyes and knew it was late at night, yet there was much noise. She heard swords against swords and the sound of men dying. She smelled the stench of human flesh and looked around confused. Her mothers guard suddenly came through the door and opened her cell. With one swift move he lifted her and carried her like a rag doll out of her prison. The last image she had was that of the town on fire and none being spared.
When they arrived back to the city her mother informed her that when she was well she was to be banished from the city. It was the only way she could spare her life. Kilena nodded not caring anymore about her life. Her mother told her of a drow clan that had made their way to the surface, and while Kilena would not be treated as she was in this city, it was somewhere she could go. The final advice her mother left with her was to never trust anyone other than herself. She slipped a silver pendant over her daughters head and never looked back to say goodbye. Three days later Kilena awoke to find herself in the forest alone. She laid there the tears flowing freely, so much hurt. She lost the man she had loved, her mother, her family.
It was not long until she found the Drow clan that her mother had spoken of, led by a male. She spent much of her time with them, watching as they interacted much differently than that of her own city. They seemed entertained by humans, and even lived amongst them. She remembered the first day she had met Kay Velve’Niar. She had been introduced to him by her leader Gorhun, and instantly she knew there was something different with this drow. Over time he won her trust and her heart. Along one of their many walks they confessed their love to one another. Kilena agreed to marry him and was the happiest she could remember. She never saw him again after that night. Her heart was once again broken, and she could only assume what had happened to him. She left the Drow clan and once again walked alone. She found herself in Wind, a city very similar to her own, and that was where she remained.
She ventured once to the surface, and it was then that she saw him. She had been asked to deliver some supplies to a surface tavern, The Garden. There he had been with his arm around another woman. The breath left her as he looked to her and she at once saw the recognition in his eyes. She spun on her heel and left, determined to never venture to the surface again. That was before he had ventured into her world.
Kilena closed the book she had been reading with an emphatic “thump”. She sighed to herself as she placed her head in her hands. Why could she not get him out of her head? He was obviously in love with another, and had been for some time apparently. Why did she let him do this to her. She had ventured into the underdark to rescue him, and Kilena had her chance to do away with them both and yet she had once again been weak. She only hoped that he wouldn’t pay any mind to the note in his journal. If he came here, she would be easy to find. The shopkeepers all knew her, and knew she was the only drow here.
Kilena sighed and placed the book by the floor of her bed and soon was fast asleep, dreaming dreams of a man she had no control over. |
