Fresh flowers bristled against the summer breeze, their hues of pale pink and beige a contrast to the granite. Every so often a petal would catch on the deeply etched calligraphy and tug the rest of the buds in it's general direction. She withdrew her hand from the bouquet and backed up glancing down at the smattering of grass newly formed on the oblong mound of dirt beside her. Words, she thought, were too heavy and lingered where thoughts alone were enough. When the shell and the heart were separated it made no difference how loud the syllable, just how deep the sentiment.

Muscles still weak from lack of use argued as she tried to turn. Her left foot buckled beneath the pressure forcing her knee to bend more than the usual. Catching it, she managed to right her foot and adjust her balance. She closed her eyes and drank it in, the scent of heat and the promise of an evening edged in possibility. Nature's offer of continuity, of continuance, of moving forward... She just had to follow it's lead.

How long had it been since she had done even half a days worth of work? Her arms burned and her stomach no longer unclenched when she bent. Despite only a minor spattering of grey along her temples, she felt a good deal older than what she was. What she was...

Years had rushed by like the wagon wheels of a caravan headed for full pockets. They cared not what was trampled beneath the roar of the wooden spokes and they paid no heed to the mud slung far and wide in the process. Mud she herself had been knee deep in, blindly wading through for her own significant amount of time. It had seemed to contract around her then, sucking her deeper until the mix of slate grey and brown were all but plastered to lungs. She could have inhaled it, drank it in. When had release come? When had the rain of a new age washed the grime away? Or was it really still there and only hidden beneath a newer revamped surface?

Perhaps a new face, this apprentice from Haven... would answer that question and illuminate the inner workings of a mud slathered road.
