Quinn stalks back toward the desert, a threat to every inanimate object in her path. In one hand, she carries the summons sent her by Myrddin ordering her to return to camp immediately. In the other, a rolled parchment sealed with red wax and stamped with a cross.

To Lord Myrddin ab'Arawn and Lady Merci d'Rue,

I send this word by hand of your own clan, that it might reach you more swiftly and assuredly than by any other messenger I could muster. But also because there is strife within Ashencrosse that I do not wish to inflict upon your people.

The gypsy camp that held your crystal for observation and research has fallen victim to the dangers of the self-same crystal. The clan there has lost two children, and two more are gravely ill. As we have been unable to find a way to stop the illness, I cannot say with any degree of certainty what has caused the plague. For this reason, I have quarantined the community within our fortress.

The greatest concern is that the children here are dying, yet those of your clan are hardly affected by the crystals. I worry that perhaps the characteristics and qualities of this crystal and the threat it bears may have mutated in your absence. It is no secret that the painted girl named Quinn often frequented our camp, and my fear was that her presence there, or the presence of any associated with Stonegate, could cause one of two problems.

First, there is the possibility that one from your clan could further contaminate a camp already rife with loss and grief. Secondly, I cannot guarantee that those from Stonegate, having visited the camp, would not carry back with them the cross-contamination of a mutated strain of danger that could in turn cause greater damage to the people of Stonegate upon reconvening at your own camp.

For these reasons, I have closed Ashencrosse to any and all traffic associated with Stonegate. If there are messengers from your clan, please have them check in at the entrance, and we will deal with them as best we can. We will try to communicate any and all discoveries and theories on the crystal phenomenon as quickly as possible as well.

It is my earnest hope that these precautions are but a temporary necessity that will not result in long-term repercussions within the diplomacy between our two communities. I pray good fortune follows you, and that in time, fate lifts us all above the pain and suffering which now plagues us.

With Hope,
Aurelia Bretane
Countess of Ashencrosse
