|
Thirty minutes after logging in to check something, I attempted to log back into my account. "Wrong password." This was the error I got about 4 times. After hearing about the latest happenings, I took no chances. I told the people in vent and Edda that if I'm logged in, find me and kill me.
Turns out I was logged in. Edda and Davaran searched for me as I was on the phone with EA. Edda found my character at Luna bank and flamestruck him. The guy ran off with Edda in tow. This lasted for a couple minutes.
On the phone with EA, I quickly told them the situation. I keep my UO CD Keys at the computer desk at all times, and I remember my CC number by heart. I gave all of this information to the EA rep and they blocked my account, leaving my character stranded in Luna.
After fifteen minutes of grueling suspense, I log back in. All of my valuable stuff, save for my Mercenary shirt, was bagged up. I'm guessing there was about to be a handoff when Edda came in and attacked me (love that chick). Hero of the Day goes to Edda. After a quick inventory, I'm guessing I lost only about 10-20 mil, as I forget how much I had in the bank exactly.
How did the hacker get my info? I do not know. I never give out my info. I've not downloaded anything specific in the last week or so. So... I'm at a loss. _________________

The more I read about these things happening in the com, the more I wonder.
What is the common denominator? Any websites? Online friends? What the hell is going on here?
People this has happened to should seriously talk privately to see if they can find any links.
Seriously.
You lucked out. Way to go Edda. _________________

Have you run a virus scan? Spyware/malware scan? |

That's a disturbing trend reported by the vics...clean scans.
Some of the stuff doesn't show up, and resets your pc's ability to detect them as such after a prompted restart. _________________

System is clear according to 3 separate scans (one on-board, 2 net scans) _________________

You aren't using an email account for UO that has a 'hint question' are you? I've had to help many people over the years when I worked as a broker who were using Yahoo and even one using an ISP email that had their email essentially hacked. The ISP one they actually were able to impersonate the individual enough to fool the rep. The thief then was able to get the uo password reset and access the account. If you have to use an email outside of you hosting it, do everything in your power to make sure the info you have for your retrieval isn't something someone can figure out through just 'getting to know you' or guessing. If your questions is "What is your favorite color?", say something like airplane.
Glad to hear they didn't clean you out and it was caught in time.

The email I use is my school email, which is actually extremely secure. If I try to sign in under an unfamiliar IP it asks me about 2-3 questions. Typically, regardless of the questions, I have different answers like you suggest.
Although my favorite color really IS airplane. Really meshes well with this shade of walltile I have. _________________

*ponders*
Have you posted any screenshots that have your account name on them?
Have you paid with the same CC for anything from a UO player that was the same CC as your UO account?
Do you use different passwords for each uo account and each thing like forums, ICQ, etc? |

Also, given this latest attempt.
Perhaps it would be a good idea for the tech savvy rpers to create a thread with a general "How to protect your UO Account" theme to see if there are any updates to any current guide we have as well as bring the information to the attention of the community as a whole? |

That is exceptional performance on all parts to save your stuff.
Though I find it extremely discouraging that with that botched attempt and Ceinwyn's hit, two breaches occured in under a week. _________________ Dryzzid#5091 | 74503058 |
