I think alot of it has to do with how much 'hacking' has changed. It used to be savvy kids and young adults just trying to prove their prowess or very exacting industrial/business espionage. Now it's a huge international business of organized crime trying to swipe your info. Maybe they don't care what's in your hotmail, but they -do- care about what's in your bank or credit card site.

It's big business now. Chinese WOW gold selling companies now hack players to steal from because it's the most efficient way to get gold. So you get a lot of awful engrish spam trying to get you to go to websites full of trojans, and the crazy thing is PEOPLE FALL FOR THIS. I screenshot them now because they are so bad.
WARNING. DO NOT GO TO ANY OF THE URLS LISTED IN THE SHOTS. THIS SHOULD BE OBVIOUS, BUT I AM WARNING YOU ANYWAYS. I'm honestly not too concerned since you'd have to go out of your way to type them, but still. Don't do it. I'm posting them because the engrish is terrible and I'm sure you guys will get a kick out of it. The URLs are sort of part of the engrish, they're all variants of the same theme but often in weird word combinations.

But it's not only this that can get you. I almost lost my account due to a pretty clever phish scam. One of the trojan sites bought a domain very close to a site that lets you view character profiles and copied it exactly, except requiring a login to search for things. They did this at a time when Blizzard changed how the profile site worked, and bought ads from google for it to have it be the top search result when anyone searches for wow armory. I'm a failure and couldn't remember the URL so googled it, thought "Why are they asking me to log in" when I saw it but did it because my boyfriend REALLY REALLY wanted me to see his profile. I mentioned the login to him, he said that was odd and that it shouldn't happen, I re-read the URL I went to and saw it said warCART and not warCRAFT, and proceeded to rubbish my pants while I changed my password asap.
I think the lesson here is, if you're not going to bother to speak English fluently, just don't interact with people and make copies of sites to try and trick them.

When I very first started playing UO on someone else's account, someone they knew lost their account over a site. I don't know if it was supposed to seem official or what, but the purchase of something was involved. Since then I've always avoided anything UO gold or item related like the black plague could pop up at me instead of a trojan. For years I wouldnt go anywhere that was not UO.com. Period. So surprising about Guide. Even still how many days later?

Yes. I now that sounds naive or whatever. But still. When a trusted site not only fails but puts you at certain risk, you feel a little betrayal. Or something.

Goona, those in game phishing things threw me off when I first got one. They usually try to make themselves sound like a legitimate GM by making a name similar. I ended up looking up the warnings on it. You still see the more inexperienced people in trade chat asking if it is legit. I mean look at that one in your post, that is exactly what gets people, when they pose as GMs telling you your account is in danger. Sometimes it's very obvious, but every now and then they manage to make one that looks legit enough to fool a more unsuspecting player.

The bigger problem I face with WOW, is that my email receives quite a few messages from people claiming to be Blizzard. They copy the email name and use it, and the whole page usually is a very nice and official looking form either warning that your account is about to be shut off or that you are under review for something or your account information was changed, so "go here" to the URL they give you in the email. It's so ridiculous, I can't tell them apart from the real Blizzard emails half of the time.

I think my own WOW account was hacked from one of those false Battlenet pages. I don't know how I got a bad link to it, as the only time I had used it was during the merge, but it happened anyway. There was also no virus on my PC after scanning. There is just no other possible reason. Now I only link off the community page or the log in for the game itself. Thankfully, no one has ever wanted my UO account that badly.

Yeah, I ordered an authenticator the day my account nearly got hacked.

A lot of the engrish spam is really awful. If you took a second to read it, you'd realize it's not legit at all. The only one out of all of those that looks the least bit legit is the GM one. My favorite is the unicorn zebra one though, even the website it sends you to makes no sense, and the username of the person isn't even trying to impersonate Blizzard staff.
