Emily sat quietly on the left hand corner bench of Stonegate’s main Meeting hall. Her hands in her lap, she replayed the last few weeks over and over again in her mind’s eye. They say one pebble tossed onto the water’s surface creates an endless amount of ripples. You never know how far they are going to reach and once it’s done you can’t take it back. Emily’s unexpected presence had been more like an unwelcome cyclone in an already stormy sea. Tide after tide, she had rushed in doing her damndest to make her presence felt. And ebb after ebb the marks that were left in the icy snow of the d’Rue beach were uncertain and indiscernible. So many things she wanted to get across and time, like the light of the sun near dusk, was running out on her.
She felt like with every step she took forward she was having to dance backward four all the while watching the snow cover where she’d been like the foamy waves. Merci, her baby girl lived in a blockade of guilt with occasional glimpses into the world of calm. Tsunami after tsunami of snow seemed to pile every time she made headway with her. Fiona. Well at least she had promised to spend more time with that beautiful baby. Maybe what Emily needed to do was to spend time with the little prodigy herself. Fiona would appreciate it, she thought. She hoped. And her precious grandchildren. A tear half hidden between worlds rolled down her cheeks at the thought of her grandbabies. Kuruth and Alexis were strangers still. Her thoughts lingering on words tinged with sleep as Korin’s voice arose, “I am trying to fix what is not broken.”
"Maybe not broken, but not really fine either," she commented. There in the dark, a heart that was no longer flesh and blood began to sliver and fracture into pieces of frustration and sorrow. Her tone, quiet and filled with pain reached into the darkness searching for a destination she knew was there even if she couldn’t touch it. “Marus, Am I doing the right thing? Maybe knowing us isn’t what they need. Maybe it’s forgetting. “ |

Rowan danced about her wings fluttering she was stuck in an endless loop. Merci watched and finally she reached out her hand to help the small creature. This was her granddaughter. As her hand lifted to grasp the small creature she felt a flash of heat so hot it burned her to the core. Her memory at last unleashing something long and deeply held.
She saw herself in a field with a weapon to big for one so small to handle. She swung madly. I have you now! the child yelled. Yet it was a horrid sound as the weapon caught the creature hitting it hard and she heard the small crack.
It fell to the ground...
Curls falling across her forehead she kneeled scooping it up noting it was more squishy then before. I will take it to mama! She can fis anything.
Reality had set in.. Emily could not save the creature. She followed her father out the door small tears on her cheeks. They would bury it...
Merci flashed back now and tiny Rowan gave an exhausted sigh giving up her circular flight and colliding to rest on Merci's shoulder.
Guilt, guilt... had racked her little heart, when she killed for the first time, when her sister was taken, when her parents were slaughtered.....
Yet she had put her life on hold as some punishment, refusing to live...welcoming death.
She would always welcome death, but the moments before death would now be lived more fully.
She scooped up Rowan in her hand and smiled. You need to meet your grandmother, She is strong and she knows how to love...
Her mother wasnt trying to change her, she was simply saying.. Open thy eyes.. _________________ May destiny guide you... |
