The horse was stolen, the armor was a little bit more than borrowed, and the axe had been taken out of the back of an orc laying face down on the dirt road. Not one of those things mattered to Zaren as she lay on her back soaking up the sun in the middle of Trinsic. The only thing that mattered currently was the piece of grass she was chewing on and the plans she had for the future. Every last one of those plans involved gold. With her hands splayed behind her head she closed her eyes. Mentally finagling finances was going good until a shadow blocked out her sun. Squinting an eye she quit chewing on the blade of grass and peered up at the annoying figure making a piss poor excuse for a sky light.
“You can’t stay here Miss.”
“I can’t?”
“No, you can’t.” Zaren shook her head in acknowledgment of that little statement and twisted her lips in thought.
“Who says I can’t?”
“I do.”
“I who?”
“Isaac, the Town guard.”
“You gonna make me get up, Isaac, the town guard? “
“Yes ma’am.” Isaac, in an obvious attempt to spark fear pulled out his sword. An interesting feat considering the boy couldn’t have been more than 16 years in age with weapon bigger than he was.
“I’m awful comfy here Isaac. You sure you wanna make me move?”
“You can get up Miss or I can drag you u…” Isaac didn’t get to finish his statement. Just as he started to say up Zaren had rolled, her legs taking Isaac’s down in one fell swoop. Quickly getting to her feet she pulled the dagger from her thigh and successfully threw it down dead center between Isaac’s legs where he had fallen. The shock of almost losing valuable appendages registered on the town guard.
“Glad we had this little chat, Isaac. Maybe when you grow up a little you’ll remember not to disturb a lady when she’s comfy on the grass.” With a laughing smile Zaren reached over and grabbed the young guard’s sword. “I’ll just make sure this finds a good home.” Throwing the sword against her shoulder like a sack of flour Zaren gave a wink and started down the road. Plans were plans and it was time to get to ‘em. |

Zaren cussed under her breath. She was going to have to replace yet another dagger having forgotten the last one thrown precariously between the young guards legs days ago. She had been on her way out to purchase a new one when she ran into the hooded figure at the edge of the bridge in Umbra. She was used to being stopped when she went places, but crossing a bridge was a new one. Of course all of Umbra currently had guard stations posted as well as cannons placed. Within minutes she knew it was going to be her job to annoy Drayden Calamyr. Nothing like being the corn cob stuck right up someone’s butt to get the day started.
On the flip side, due to Draysy she now had gainful employment . Speaking of which, she thought, it was time to get to it. 5,000 gold retainer was small but it was enough to get her motivated, at least the first time out. Eventually the Boss, whoever he was, would see she was worth a lot more. And if not, then she would simply have to be the corn cob up his butt as well (or the blow dart he didn't see coming). Grinning to herself she hopped a moongate to her first job. Time to work she thought. |

The old wizard recognized the black cloaked figure that entered the Double Dagger that evening. The new Patron of the Drow Matron. Governor of this area as it would be.
"This girl is seeking employment. I figured she could do the company some good."
Mr. Narshan nodded and led her upstairs speaking to her a professional manner as one would a future employee. If her motivation was as simple as gold, then that could be easily provided for her secured loyalty. The Boss would likely want to meet with her to approve such a measure, but she had what it took to become a valued employee of the company. He could even think of the possible missions that the Boss would consider her for. All of which were dangerous... |
