It was early evening when Kinn found himself walking the snowy grounds of Stonegate once again. He had been here several times before; always in the shadows and always unseen.

He had come a few times on orders from the Boss to observe, report and, if possible, negotiate an alliance.

He had come once at the request of his brother to find out more information about the Stonegate lycans—a topic which, for whatever reason, fascinated and enthralled Ladron. In fact, Kinn was sure that it was only a matter of time before Ladron came to Stonegate himself. He knew that once Ladron became focused on learning something he would not rest until he had the knowledge he sought.

This time, however, Kinn was here for himself. After watching the residents of Stonegate for so long Kinn found himself drawn to them. They were a powerful group and they shared a surprisingly strong bond. Even the merchants were hardy folk. Of course, the perpetual cold and the ever-present snow would undoubtedly be unforgiving on the weak, so the strength of the Stonegate residents really did not surprise Kinn all that much. Still, he admired what he saw.

As the night wore on the wind picked up and the snow began to fall yet again. Before long the wolves began to call to one another. Kinn had heard these wolf calls every time he visited Stonegate. It made him wonder what exactly was being said. It wouldn’t surprise him much if the wolves knew he was around. Kinn shuddered at the thought.

If the wolves know I’m here then the lycans must also know. And yet, they let me walk among them, even before tonight. Kinn smiled at the thought.

He continued his walk of Stonegate, carefully noting the details of every building, memorizing the general layout of the town and getting a stronger feel for the shadows of the land. Kinn made it a point to know any area he was going to operate in like the back of his hand. He would walk the shadows here until they felt like home to him and he would know where each resident lived and where every possible entrance and exit to Stonegate could be found. Before this walk was over, Kinn would know Stonegate better than most residents did.

As the snow fell harder the wolves continued to call to the night. Kinn stopped and listened, trying hard to distinguish each of them—to get to know them by their voices.

After all, Kinn thought to himself, It would be wise to get to know ALL of my future comrades.
