I personally think this "incident" has excellent RP potential. At least for those that were attacked.

OOCly, sure, an attack is an attack and exposing a ninja by attacking them gives a ninja the right to fight or flee.

That being said, this could be fun ICly. If there is any way to identify the ninjas (either because they mouth off about what awesome ninjas they are IC or perhaps one of their bodies was recoverd), then that is grounds for a political incident. Any claim that the BL are murderous thugs who enter someone elses territory and attack its inhabitants cannot be deflected ICly, because they did in fact do it. It doesn't matter who attacked first. There is a reason why being accused of using assassins or ninjas was a horrific thing in older times, because it decried you as a coward and meant you could not be trusted to fight honorably. Usually that resulted in a witch hunt to kill the offender AND the assassins.

If you guys feel like using this, spread the word of these ninja scum who attack without cause from the shadows. No one SHOULD believe ninjas if they try to defend themselves by saying they were attacked first while on enemy soil. They're cowards who sneak through the shadows. They're ninjas who eat babies and stare at you while you sleep. If these sorts of incidents continue, various parts of the IC community could ban together to hunt them. Fun for all! Cat and mouse at its best. Ninjas had to keep a low profile for good reasons. They weren't strong and powerful warriors that could go toe to toe with the warriors of the realm. If they are smart, they will keep a low profile. If they act aggressively, they should be hunted (again ICly is key here. OOC vengence is dumb).

The problem with that is that we are not like that at all. We're a clan of ninjas formed to watch over the Empress who also has her army of samurai. So they know if they hunt us down to try to kill us they also have to deal with a whole other army. And I don't think any of us mouth off IC about what awesome ninjas we are.. I only do it OOC Laughing

OOC mouthing off IS a lot easier. Harder for me to get my cumupins. Was always a fan myself.

But the next argument could be is that the Empress is dishonorable scum (how does that go over in your society?) for employing a bunch of cutthroat shadow walkers who are still attacking other groups, without warning, on their soil. Regardless of a guilds/clans/secret enclaves stated purpose, the fun of the game comes in how their actual actions portray them to others. Someone can intend to be a righteous paladin, but through RP and situational occurence he/she finds themselves doing extremely evil and un-paladiny things, until no one recognizes them as a 'good guy' at all. At that point they can do one of two things. 1) Ignore it and continue to say they are a perfectly noble sort and come off to everyone else as intolerably smug in an OOC fashion, or 2) Take the consequences of their actions and become a fallen paladin who does evil or attempts to walk a road of redemption.

In the same way, whatever the ninjas are MEANT to be, does not neccessarily mean what they ARE. And I find that concept to be far more interesting and involved than a straight-laced organization that can do no wrong. There is something about paths of corruption and roads of redemption that give me the sense that those involved are actually living in the world, not hovering above it as if they played it through a computer screen. And to clarify, it is the former of those two that I find makes far more interesting RP.

If the ninjas become a liability, perhaps the Empress should be punishing them/hunting them herself. And then some can escape and become missing ninjas. Oh the fun of personal conflict and the harsh path of IC accountability.

Or maybe BL is a clan full of ninjas who kill drow because it is good for the Empress. Ho hum.
