After the Council left, Jeren sat at his desk and gave great thought looking at his blank parchment in front of him. The Matriarch wrote in reply and Jeren informed his Council to not give reply. His thoughts raced...should he ink the message that has been going through his head for the last two days. He glanced away and leaned back in his chair...rubbing his chin...from nowhere logical in which could be explained Jeren leaned forward and ink fell softly and swiftly on the blank parchment.
Matriarch of Umbra,
My sincere apologies for not returning a response any sooner than this day. The Republic has been in closed session completing the final touches of policy in Jhelom. Your response was informative enough that I have to say makes me curious, but unfortunately, not great enough of an interest to meet with ye at this time. As per this Republic's stance on where we stand as nations...Jhelom has no reason to assume that you or those that serve under you are enemies of Jhelom. With that being said, I have to address that I did not contradict anything in my letter. I simply wanted to explain that we are not of a neutral stance. That if forced we would take up arms, but it will never be the first option. Your critical views on diplomacy or how to resolve current events is a clear weakness that if not remedied could lead your nation, as a whole, into further turmoil. I must admit, as a strength, you have a voice that could change an entire movement of thought if used in the right forum; for that in itself, I respect.
In closing, no matter the tone you perceive from this letter I assure ye that you will always have an ear when it comes to this Republic. Like I stated above, I have no reason to call you an enemy, and in time, when this Republic is completely established I hope to meet on neutral grounds to further any discussion we can share for the moment through our dedicated messenger's.
Respectfully,
Chief Magistrate Yendorin
Republic of Jhelom

While it was certainly not odd for the governmental offices of Umbra to have some staff on hand over a weekend it was certainly strange for the Minister to be putting in his hours. Salaried employees so rarely go beyond the call of duty, but none the less Itullus was in for the afternoon going over inventories and reports to catch up from the last few lax months of administration.
A rather beleaguered secretary pushed open the wooden door to the Minister's office and came in with an armful of papers and envelopes. She walked with a very straight posture and took adorably short steps in her full length pencil skirt. She came to the side of the ashen-stained, oak desk and set down a bevy of materials. Itullus swiveled around in his chair and met her gaze with his own warm, smile.
"Ah, hello my dear. Mail arrived then? What do we have?..."
She smiles briefly, their curt and genuine exchanges were about the extend of the frivolity she enjoyed during the work day. "We have three packets of application for stewardship, it seems those farm folks up to the north-west didn't care much for the arbitration we offered and they are all claiming stewardship over each other. Um, what else...We also have some dockets from the Grand Adjudicator. Couple requests for capitol punishment. We have two diplomatic notes and...some other facility bills."
"Thank you, darling. Would you empty my outbox into the outgoing mail, please? Throw on another pot of the java then take off for the day, eh? You look tired." Picking up his pile of mail, Itullus made straight for the diplomatic packages and opened the note with the seal from Jhelom. "Mm. I suppose I should have Bailos read this before taking it to her...I can almost smell the idealism on the paper." he remarked as his folded the note neatly back up and put it into a drawer for later delivery. |
