It was dawn as Sortok stood in one of his usual positions at the window with his arms crossed behind his back. He stared out the window to the west, looking over a series of buildings not far from his own. He heard a loud roar followed by the door downstairs slamming open with force that he thought was impressive. Logan, he thought to himself. The door to Sortok's office flung open, followed up a few seconds later with Logan entering.
"What is this outrage?!" Logan demanded, with such ferocity that Sortok new that he put more than his voice behind that inquiry.
"What are you talking about, old friend?"
Logan slammed down one of the posts written by Samon Triest commanding the militia to detain anyone wearing a hood or drow in the city limits. Sortok sat down and read the post and without lifting his head asked, "What of it?"
"You call me a friend yet you let this horrendous law be passed against my people? How could you possibly let this go through without so much as a question to the Council?"
"Because, my friend, it is not my duty to ask questions but rather to fulfill duties that were put upon me by my superiors. Do you think I watched this go by without so much as a troubling thought?"
Logan did not answer.
Sortok rose out of his chair aggressively and began again, "If you did, then you know me not. It's not one of my rights to question any decision made by the council, the Vice Mayor, or even the Mayor himself. This decision is righteous in the fact that it was an action of last resort and not one just for the benefit of clearing the streets of hooded men and drow. And what of matters concerning relations with the drow? I've painted a target on my head! Enforcing this rule and catching that person (who looked as though he was drow) at the scene where we later discovered Hikiko, has made me an enemy. I have no room for more enemies, so I wish not to make one of a person who has been a friend since the day of my birth. Does this answer your questions?"
"Aye. It does."
"Then I have your support?"
Logan paused for a moment. He pondered over the past conversations and finally withdrew his argument with, "Aye."
"Good because for the time being you are one of the few that puts support behind my actions. But right now I have a favor to request of you."
"What is it, my friend?"
"Many of the people in Sosaria practice arcane arts. Perhaps you can teach me to resist such?"
"Aye! Let's get started!" Logan shouted and immediately shot a bolt of lightning from his palm, blasting Sortok out of his office door and into the next room. Sortok rose, pulling out his sword and prepared for the next series of spells Logan was to teach him to resist. _________________ Save a drum. Bang a drummer!
