Like what Ariana says, I have, in the past, felt the need to make all my bookshelves "friends only" because way too many roleplayers would walk in and "study", then try to use it against us. Sorry, that's bad sportsmanship and bad rp.
In general think of it like this Bishimi, it's your personal library, do you keep it locked up Rp-wise? I would think so. You wouldn't want people getting in and learning your darkest secrets.
Anything you read in private halls is for OOC flavor text. Not to be used IC unless you ask permission.
Consider the following:
You are out wandering, and end up walking through someone's decorated house. You wander a bit and end up in their bedroom. This person's private diary is locked on their bed stand, but you have access game mechanics wise. You can read the book in game, and enjoy it OOC, but you can not use that for your roleplay. It would be metagaming, or the using of knowledge learned OOC that your character generally would not otherwise know IC.
The only way your character would have known what's in the book is:
1. Via a plot with ooc consent ahead of time, you rp "sneaking" in their house and come across it.
2. You are Rp with the person in game in their house and you read it.
3. The book was left in your house.. mysteriously, by some unknown person. Again that would be part of some plot, most likely.
All of the above you would have to assume the books aren't locked or magically trapped to do something ill to you if you open them. A personal diary? Hell yeah people take measures to protect important stuff.
It's mostly a courtesy, but it should be common sense that a vampire would NOT allow a random passer by to just wander into their house and learn secrets that would kill them. Same goes with anyone. |

If it's unlocked and you've found it, pending permission from the owner or proprietor, I'd like to assume you know it. Securing doors, containers, or what have you isn't so much of an inconvenience that it should impede role play. Further more, knowledge and practice are very different things. I've spent more than a few nights perusing knowledge in that forsaken faucet, maybe you ancient seekrit society types shouldn't leave your arcane badassery laying around eh? _________________ Work in Progress.

i have always found that it is the height of bad manners to walk into someone's house even if it does say open to the public, the only ones i walk into are say taverns, the sep and my own unless invited...
but that is just me _________________ cezanna "No, he is a fair and faithful man, Ranna"

My take is, if I can access it, then it is public domain. I feel like if my character walks up to a book, and can open it not baring a lock or some magic binding it, then my character knows the contents of the book. |

i gotta agree with this....if it was so important and private it wouldnt be out there for folks to find. if were thinking were gonna end up fighting....say...moonglow for whatever reason were gonna find ways, IG and IC to learn all we can. so if we come across a book stating who is a good fighter of what ones weakness are that is something i think would be IC and totally free to use.
i know personally when i set books, regardless of what they are, to public i assume that any can and will read it and use it to their advantage. there has even been a couple cases where we would "accidentally" leave battle plans out in the open for any to read. not planned in any way...i just think its cool to give ppl a chance to do something and learn bout others....if they chose to look that is. |

I usually used to leave my doors open for random non rpers to find and get interested in. I don't do it anymore, like I said, because there are those who feel game mechanics justify RP. Neither side is right or wrong, just differing view points that have always existed. |

I leave most of my houses set to public and the books in them to anyone and I have given permission for some to come as they will and read them. Having said this, if someone was to stealth into the house and read them, I consider this part of the game but, if I was to reveal them I would confront, question and if they ran, attack them without second thought.
However, someone not stealth and just walking in without permission I feel is Metagaming for in RP we have servants, watchmen and other fictional characters and NPCs in our houses that would notice them and either have tried to stop them or at the least let someone know of it.
For instance, once several of CAP and TGC where in my manor, I detected a stealthier which Bishimi and I are reasonably sure was one of his. I did not have anyone in the house at the time that had tracking on there character so I felt it would be Metagaming to reveal him, so I just waited to see if he messed up and exposed himself and if he did we would have attacked and dragged him off to the jail.
Just because you know how to kill us doesn't mean your going to pull it off, and if it is something that I do not wish to be read, i will lock it up. _________________ "Sic Gorgiamus Allos Subjectatos Nunc...
