Stress had been high on the list of Merrique's issues to deal with as of late. There was so much going on and she was still adjusting to the idea of life without Ceinwyn's presence, there was an unfortunate incident at the Den that left her feeling rather shaken, and all of the other day to day details of a person in her position--which was precarious at times, being Umbran and married to a Humanis.

Deciding that a little down time was in order, Merrique left her family's Umbra home and made her way to the mountainside retreat. Thinking she was alone with the exception of the hired help, she set about making a fire in the hearth and asked the cook to prepare her some hot food to enjoy before the flames. With a yawn and a mighty stretch she decided to go up to the bedroom and change into a cozy and careworn robe.

She quietly padded down the hallway toward the master bedroom and pushed the door open. Standing before her dressing table was her eldest child, naked from the waist up and admiring his now muscular frame in the only mirror in the home. It wasn't until she chuckled and took a step back that her presence was noticed.

"Mom. Uhm. Hi," he stammered as his hand frantically searched for his nearby shirt. Merrique was about to launch into a tirade about respecting people's personal spaces, when the humor of the situation hit her. She gave a dismissive wave to him and left the bedroom. As the door closed behind her she heard the thud of the boy's quiver hitting the floor as he struggled to dress.

Stepping out into the hall, she thought to herself, there are definitely worse things a mother could walk in on.

And you don't have to work at staying there.
All you have to do is survive it.
And I've been doing that forever.
