For you older Rpers...anyone know why we stopped using guild-colors?

I'm not going anyplace with this, just thought of it the other night. Wink

Yeah, I mean you SOMEWHAT see the remnants of the old custom of ours with guilds like Sanctus (black?) House of Isk (bronze?), House of the Gauntlet (Luna White?) The King's Hand (Red) and Moonglow (Blue) all of which are GMed by old community members who have it ingrained under pain of death in our psyche that a guild must...simply MUST have a color! Wink

Guild colors are mainly used by military guilds it seems.

Non-military based guilds kind of have little reason to wear a uniform.

To add on to what Vaen said...

One of the fun parts of UO is dressing up your character how you like. For a non-military character, you have the choice of all the items in the game (barring ones you can't use due to race/gender) so people don't want to be restricted by colors.

They like their shadow and blood red Smile

Sanctus always has been and always will be required to wear black and gold.

We have a saying when our recruits ask the questions of uniforms:

"You can wear whatever colors you like, so long as those colors are black and gold"

This is true, it does fit the "military character" more unless you take into account the notion of a "guild" as it existed in Southern Europe particularly in Italy.

Much like Leshok stated I know that in Italy corner-clubs operated as "Guild-Halls" and members of said Guilds when attending functions or...brawling in a Piazza (because fishmonger guild A dissed fishmonger guild B) they wore a guild color or some sort of a scarf to signify their membership.

Modern day example of this would be the Sienese Horse-Race held once a year in Sienna where different municipalities within Sienna converge in the town's square decked out in the colors of their municipality to cheer on their mounted racer.

Of course for you futbol fans the fanatics wearing their scarves causing near riots.

But I suppose it would depend on the nature of the Guild. Military-Guilds, Trade-Guilds, House/Family Guilds, or scholarly Guilds would be the only ones who I suspect historically would wear any sort of defining garment.

Actually, the modern day Roman-Catholic Priest's black with a white-box collar developed from something quite similar to the system above.

This raises another point...am I the only one who considers main-land Britannia to be the English/German Medieval word, Nujel'm/Magincia/Moonglow Spain/Italy/France, Malas The New World and Tokuno the Far East in terms of culture differences and IRL Personas? Smile

That's how I always compared the cities appearance wise, culturally and in terms of accent. Adrien being Magincian I always pictured as a little more tan with some sort of a subtle Italic/French accent and mentality.

I'd consider just about all of Sosaria to be English/German, and maybe a little Italy. No France or Spain though.

Malas, I don't think really fits into anything. But Tokuno definitely the east.

Aye my logic for Malas was the exodus of people from the Britannian mainland such as the Stormguard and Molly and then the current Umbran Government's idea of acceptance and freedom.

One of our Costumes includes Black and Tan, an ode to the amazing paramilitary force...or the drink. I'm not sure which.

Umbran colors are officially shadow and black. yes there's a difference. I dye the cloth shadow with a bugged leather tub im lucky to have.

When we drops books (for two years now) we make a banner with our colors.

All official Umbran homes, however, use the purple and blue sign on the home. On UO.com, the necromancer flag is on a field of purple and blue, that is where it comes from, as Umbra is the city of necromancy and shadow.

While only the lowest ranking have to wear an all black robe until they prove their loyalty, there is no established dress code, even though we are military. Our reason is that we don't want to be distinguishable on the field of war.. like our enemies... whom at a glance we can denote high officers of sanctus by the sashes and other such that they wear.

We have worn uniforms though for formal events, like funerals, special trainings.

In the WIT program, children have school uniforms they must wear until they graduate. And there are different ones for females and males.

everyone in zog wears that retarded Zog Green color for some reason. except Cear, he wears black robes, healer robes, or even....the zog green robe.

Talon is correct...Sanctus wears Black and Gold...as Malic this is heavily enforced when seen.

Stahlkrieger wears Silver colored Iron armor with "special blue" garments...no options there either.

The UBB which isn't an entirely RP guild but has roleplayers...wears Valorite mostly.

Malic as sheriff, then commander now chancellor is a stickler for a uniform...this enforces many things within a guild(city state) for others to notice...Uniformity, a show of force, organization and pride in one's kingdom being a few.

Thats just my view on it all.
