Thrax frowned as he opened the door to let Anthraxas (whom he and most everyone else knew only as Thraxas) enter his office. He offered him a seat and then sat down himself behind his desk. "What do you want?" he asked curtly.

"The Academy. It hasn't opened yet. What is going on?"

"I didn't realize you had such concern for higher education," Thrax taunted him.

Anthraxas cocked back his head and framed a mocking grin. "I made it my business to keep informed about everything that goes on around here. You should know that by now. But listen... can you dispense with the snide remarks and give me a straight answer for once?"

Thrax glanced up from the book that lay open in front of him; one that he had been reading before his brother arrived. "Why didn't you ask the priest? He could have told you just as well as I that the building requires structural repairs, and," he added, "it would have saved me the misfortune of your untimely visit."

"You just cannot help yourself, can you?"

Thrax looked back down at the book and replied nonchalantly, "Could have been worse; I could have omitted 'untimely.'"

Anthraxas had learned to laugh and he did, but quickly composed himself. "How long will that take?"

Thrax, still reading, turned a page and scanned it carefully. "Could be months before it opens, or maybe never."

"Never?"

Thrax nodded. "I may not have the time for it like I thought I would." He looked up at his twin, scrutinizing him. "Why did you want to know that?"

Anthraxas rose out of his chair and adjusted his scabbard. "Well, if my services as guard hereabouts aren't needed anymore, I may return to Umbra. More to do there. Besides, I haven't seen Ceinwyn in a good long while."

"Your 'services' are not needed if they ever were. But enjoy yourself. Tell the Matriarch I send greetings."

"I will. Be sure to let everyone know where I have gone. I know they will miss me. Tell them to write when they can," Anthraxas said, winking, as he turned to leave.

"Oh you can bet I will."

Anthraxas grinned as he exited the room. The first part of his plan was now in motion.
