Tommy sat at his work bench, head bowed over ancient scrolls of metallurgy, seeking to perfect his skills in the art of creating weapons of great power. Although the hour was very late, he was unaware of such things when at his work. But suddenly a soft sound from behind him caused him to jump from his stool.
“ Be not afraid good smith.” whispered a shadowy form from one corner of the room.
Tommy began to feel around behind him for the short spear he kept handy to deal with intruders.
Another dark form emerged next to the first and hissed, “Do not try to draw that weapon you seek, for you will surely die and we are in need of your services. A dead blacksmith is of no use to us. Please sit back down.”
Summoning his courage, Tommy replied, “I know you not, nor do I care to, for you have an evil air of death about you. And you may not have my services.. I use my skills for M’Lord Malo and the Legion of Honor and no other. You are not welcome here.”
Every muscle in Tommy’s body tensed as the two hooded figures advanced towards him on silent feet and when the first one began to reach inside his robe he knew his death might be near. But no weapon was drawn. Instead a rolled piece of parchment was withdrawn and tossed in Tommy’s lap.

Tommy slowly unrolled the scroll and read the message written in a familiar hand:

Tommy, blacksmith and crafter to the Legion,
It is my wish that you give your skills to create weapons as needed for those that bare this message They have mission of great importance to fulfill. Ask no questions of them and be quick.
Lord Malo

With a sigh, Tommy glanced up. “ I see… what is it that you require.”
A third shadow, until now unseen stepped forward and replied softly, almost below hearing. “Weapons of quick death, the darkest kind.”
With a shiver, Tommy moved to his forge and began to work

[The picture is from Larry Elmore and artist who did much stuff for TSR (the old AD&D owner), especially for their Dragonlance saga.
