Months have passed since the girl Zeyla fled on foot, finding a moongate that would ultimately lead to a freedom of sorts.
After an expensive attempt at security by way of hiring bodyguards, Zeyla had a chance encounter with a man not much older than herself. His name is Ama-Tsu-Mara, and he was of the Tokuno Islands, where Zeyla was in hiding for several days. Ama took Zeyla to the Shinto School of Martial Arts, and there she met Master Jhaeldril. The seasoned warrior listened to Zeyla’s tales of woe and gave her shelter from her personal storm. In time, the master took Zeyla into the fold of his school and gave her protection that she would never have found elsewhere. The master’s wife ensured that Zeyla was well fed and clothed, doting on the girl as if she were family.
Since that time, Zeyla has been pursuing her life among the animals of Sosaria, surpassing even the elder statuses of her field—not a bad achievement for one whose eighteenth birthday came and went quietly, marking her as her own person in the world. Zeyla also helps out at the master’s school, teaching the students how to properly care for and administer first aid to their mounts. Focusing on her trade makes it easier to live with the truths of the family she once cherished and adored. Thinking too much on the matter is saddening and, often, causes psychological agitation.
Not long after Zeyla’s narrow escape, the master confronted Zeyla’s mother, demanding to know how the woman could be part of such a plan against her own child. Shortly thereafter, Elizabeth was found dead at the Moonglow lighthouse, an apparent suicide. The convoluted ramblings in the note left behind indicated an unsound mind. Included in the note was a pathetic apology to a daughter who would never read the words though it should be noted that Zeyla took the news brought to her by the master with an unnerving calm. To date, Jhaeldril has been unable to locate Zeyla’s father.
With all the darkness moving into the past day by day, Zeyla’s life should be rosy and bright. Not so. In her mind, Zeyla still sees the bruises left behind on her body by the kidnappers—the feelings of anger and resentment at being so mistreated and touched inappropriately are causing a dark mental divide. When looking into the mirror, Zeyla no longer recognizes herself. She sees a person consumed with fear, hate, anger, and remorse. Her heart cries out for vengeance. Zeyla tries to convince herself that she cannot rest until she has had her pound of flesh for what her still-living father has had bestowed upon her.
The nights are long. The meals are tasteless. The happiness and joy are gone.
Will the young woman find peace in doling out remuneration, or will pursuing street justice only cause the downward spiral to continue? |
