Some of you may have noticed the sets of water barrels placed at the the bank in Vesper that say "Nox", the arcane word of poison. These are meant to not actually be there but serve as a reminder that the water and food in Vesper has been contaminated with a plague. The plague may also spread to other towns. So keep an eye out in other towns. The plague is not and will not become airborne so those who chose to participate can and those that don't want to don't have to. Though I hope people do. This will be much different than the Orc attacks in that there won't be an actual enemy to fight. The resolution for this plot will revolve around using teamwork to find clues in an In Character manner. So don't cheat (yourself) by reading the plot post and then just assume your character knows what you the player learned. Instead try to figure out how your character would or could find that information. Remember it's just as important and fun to not know something.
If you want to read about the story of the Plague please click the link below and enjoy (there's pretty pictures too).

The Sickness of Vesper

There are a few things i will ask of you that I think will enhance the enjoyment/challenge of this particular plot.

1) Even if you're not participating please leave the barrels alone for a few days to let the community at least see the damage for themselves and have to deal with the challenges associated with not having a fully functional food and water supply.

2) No one is expected to kill off their character but casualties are to be expected throughout the course of the plague. I will probably create and kill off a temporary character at least once every other week. So do keep an eye out for and say hi to newbie looking characters it could be me or perhaps a friend you haven't met yet. If you would like to create a character just to be killed off that will be encouraged.

Below is a map of Vesper with a ring around it. Any animal or water source within that ring should be considered contaminated. Thus when seeking out food or water one should look outside this radius. While the plague is not and never will be Rogal made sure to spread the diseased rats as far as their little plague ridden legs would take them. As such carnivores have eaten the rats. Other rats have died near watering holes contaminating them and thus herbivores. Plus the droppings of these infected animals is considered

3) To halt the spread of the plague food should be foraged for outside the radius shown on the map below. Even the fish in the ocean have been contaminated within this radius. Furthermore, all food and drink should be prepared by a character trained in cooking. If you should ingest food that is not prepared by a proper cook (an NPC or novice) or cultivated or slaughtered inside the plague radius you will contract the plague.

4) The ultimate cure to the plague should be suitably researched tested and administered by a character who is technically trained in alchemy and a reasonable post should be made to represent the time it took for them to do their work. If the cure is not done by a suitable alchemist with knowledge of the plague such as a thief or ninja, then the plague will become worse in the treated individual. And more water barrels should be expected.

5) As usual mages opening gates is not an ideal method of transporting large quantities of food. Furthermore, because the plague began with snake venom being charged by a lightning bolt the plague reacts aggressively around magic. This will usually result in the spellcaster acquiring the plague themselves.

I hope these rules aren't seen as too restricting and provide a fun challenge to RP. Below are some of the symptoms you can RP as well as methods of infection.

Symptoms
(Search Septicemic Plague)
Stage 1: The early stages of the Plague patients develop fever, chills, extreme weakness, this stage generally lasts 5-7 days.

Stage 2: After the first stage symptoms of abdominal pains set in. Vomiting usually follows. The stage generally lasts 5-7 days.

Stage 3: as the plague progresses the patient will begin bleeding into the skin and other organs. Blood filled pustules will become apparent. If the patient survives the plague these will heal over as large roundish scars.

Stage 4: as a result of the internal bleeding blood will pool and clot leaving living lividity stains. These stains will appear on parts of the skin under the body and in any hanging extremities. The skin and other tissues will appear black, especially on fingers, toes.

Methods of Infection
1) drinking water acquired within the plague radius
2) Eating food acquired within the plague radius
3) touching a plague victim dead or alive
4) drinking water prepared or acquired by a novice cook within the plague radius
5) eating food prepared or acquired by a novice cook within the plague radius

Not this wednesday,Jan 22, but next, Jan 29, the traveling store moves from Britain to Vesper........... so maybe lots of "clean" food would be in order?
